Every restaurant claims they’re a “family,” but half the time it feels more like a toxic relationship with unpaid overtime and gaslighting. I’ve worked places where “we’re like family here” meant covering shifts last minute, tolerating screaming matches, and never getting a raise because “we’re all in this together.” Real families don’t guilt-trip you into double shifts or expect blind loyalty. What’s the biggest red flag you’ve seen when someone says “we’re like family here”?

“We’re like family” = we’re about to violate labor laws with emotional manipulation. If you hear that in the interview, run. The only thing you’ll inherit is burnout.

Hearing that line about a restaurant being a family is often a red flag. But, in fairness, I worked for an old school place where it really was run like that. It was a great atmosphere all around. Unfortunately the owner retired and sold the place and I had to move on. Since then, whenever I've heard a place described as a family it really has seemed to be a way of, as you say, gaslighting people.

I recently read a post about "family". The word "family" can have positive or negative feelings depending on the type of family you experienced. Some families are dysfunctional, some families are non-dyafunctional. The post went on to say that using the term "family" in a job ad can turn off people as well as turn on people. SO, be careful when you see "we treat you like family" in a job ad (-:

Saying "we're like a family here" IS the red flag. Every restaurant I've worked at that says anything like this has always been crazy toxic and horribly run. If you hear it at any point during interviews, RUN!

I’ve worked for places that use “family” as an excuse to abuse their staff. I’ve also worked at places where they treated people respectfully and had family style meals before shifts and it really felt like a nice family meal. I’d err on the side of caution though when referring to a restaurant as “family” …

Saying “we’re family here” almost implies a lack of professionalism. Aren’t we at work using our hard won and finely tuned skills? In my experience, it’s a red flag. Another red flag is “we’re all friends here”. Like seriously, can’t we just be colleagues who respect and support each other?

Run! Run far far FAR away when you hear “we’re like family here”.

An agency I freelance for wants to hire me full-time. They told me for a Sr Copywriter, 100-110k. I countered with 125-150.

I also said I'm interested in a higher-level title - I currently freelance as a Creative Director of Copy elsewhere (they don't have that title at this agency.)

They came back and said yes to the title and to 125, with a 6 month review that could raise it to 145.

Which is good for Sr Copy, but low for CD/ACD level. Don't want to screw myself over. What to say now?

My base salary is now approx. 97K. Any insights would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.
