The paperwork is an overlooked aspect that takes so much of my energy. Been doing a lot of it lately; way more than usual. Impactful work gives me purpose but also wears me out, man.
Such a tough vocation to keep work and outside life separate. If you haven't already, a little moment of conscious self reflecting always helps keep my stability. Just being mindful and trying to keep work, work.
I'm a case manager. I changed jobs from a high support of Adults with SMI to a lower support role with Seniors. The billing is in real time and helps me do one task time. No over time. This helped me get out of "fight or flight"mode and to slow down which I needed badly.
Self care is a must! Carve in the time to do what brings you to a place where you can reset and refresh. It can be scheduling breaks to go for walks, having a cup of coffee or tea, or planning a meal or event just for you later that day- giving you something to look forward too. SW’s give a lot more than their time and efforts, we must do the same with ourselves.
Wheeew. My advice from five years in is to find the things that bring you joy outside of the office. When things get really rough or discouraging at work you need to have a comfortable and clean space to come back to, real friends to let your hair down with, and real hobbies or activities you can fall back on to make you feel good when it's hard.
I am sorry you are feeling burnt out. I would probably consider if what you are doing is causing more stress than brings joy. At the end of the day your mental health matters. Is it really worth killing your brain cells when your management doesnt even value you and can replace in a heartbeat. In the meantime, do what makes you happy. It doesnt necessarily have to be cliche self care shit. Lets be real, some shit doesnt work. For me connecting with my family and friends help a lot.
Few of my friends' sanity are hanging by a thread. But most of the time they are so accepting of the fact that they personally chose the career. I am glad a few drinks brushes off their stress. Just a few laughs with friends and everyday hugs from wives and kids.
Talking to people outside the field, trying to squeeze in time for myself at night, playing games on my ipad, spending time with my family.
Social work really does take a whole lot out of you. Having to face such heavy issues takes a toll on one's mental and sometimes even physical health. It's important to find balance in it during your downtimes. Do activities that don't require you to make full use of your brain. Take a walk, paint, journal, exercise, meditate, unplug. Literally anything to calm your mind.
I would really advice everyone to leave work at work. It's the best way to practice setting boundaries. It is also important that you tap into your family and friends' support. But the most important thing is to ibserve how you react to your clients' trauma and make changes as needed.
