It’s very hit or miss for ours. What has worked for us that at least take stress off us and let’s our kid ebb and flow with eating…
1. We all eat dinner together. 5:45-6ish. Just more engaged for her plus she sometimes like to take a bite or two off our forks which leads to…
2. We all eat the same thing 90% of the time. 10% being when we want something more spicy.
3. We try to have 1 core thing we know she has liked in the past. We like Goodles as a sort of healthy Mac n cheese. Other chickpea pastas, hummus, etc. This way if she still doesn’t touch this food, we are pretty sure it’s just she isn’t interested versus doesn’t like it. We don’t force the food so this gives us peace of mind.
4. Our daughter varies preferring util a to hands. So when we can, we offer both. Say we have pizza, we leave some big and cut some for the fork. If the main doesn’t allow for this, the “1 thing we know she likes” we try to make it the opposite of the main (so finger food if the main requires utensils).
5. Last thing is we have noticed she strongly prefers saucey foods. So we have been leaning more that way on things instead of simple dishes. Opposite of what they tell you to but girl will down lasagnas with the best and ignore meat, veg, even mash potato. Loves curries, stews, etc. Stews we thicken with infant oatmeal for her to spoon easier.
Anyhow just some ideas on what has gotten us to a better spot… our kid eating more regularly and is not worrying about it as much.
Stay strong, OP. Gotta push through this💪
I agree with you. This is a challenging age for toddlers, well, especially for us parents. I won't say it get's better, but you'd definitely get the hang of it.
Pro
It is tough. I always make a big deal on how delicious my meal is and then they would want some.
Pro
Let them eat themselves. Give them finger foods and keep it simple. Add in yogurt from pouches, switch to spoons when able.
Don’t worry if they don’t eat too much. They’ll eat when they’re hungry.
Have you tried switching up their schedule? Our 15 month old was getting really crazy when it came to lunch or dinner so we changed when we gave him snacks and tried to give him larger meals when it lined up with his hunger.
That’s great to hear. We also found that he would often gorge himself full of water before eating and get full after 3 bites because of that, so just keep an eye out for that.
The poo smells more too. Fortunately, the kiddos are super cute at this age too, and pre terrible 2s.
Yes! I am in charge with changing the diapers sometimes and this has been my observation too. \
