Fidelity or Vanguard for opening a Roth IRA? I’m new to investments, still learning, and I’m more of a buy & hold / hands-off type!

Vanguard +1. Buy and hold vanguard funds no transaction fees. They are larger than fidelity

Both Fidelity and Vanguard will do fine. Both offers index funds and ETFs.

But. Look up the founder of Vanguard, John Bogle. He's the patron saint of the individual investor. No one person has done more for the common investor. Vanguard is built on the philosophy of low cost, giving as much back to investors. It's also a mutual company where investors are owners.

I like TD Ameritrade for my ROTH IRA...

like

Fidelity. You can purchase fractional shares, so you can evenly DCA into just ETFs, so no need for mutual funds.

like

Both are good. Vanguard is known to not have the best customer service and website. I’ve been a Fidelity customer for 25 years and now have everything there. Couldn’t be happier. Fidelity supports more account types. Their HSA is great as is the CMA (full checking account, 2% cash back CC, all ATM fees reimbursed) and Vanguard offers neither. With the no transaction fees, you can buy Vanguard ETFs or use the Fidelity equivalent index funds which are now often cheaper than Vanguard’s.

like

And why!

This is talked about on boggleheads some. Doesn’t sound like the ownership results in any real tangible benefits. Vanguard funds and ETFs are typically more tax efficient, which matters in taxable accounts, but you can buy them as ETFs anywhere. Both firms have pluses and minuses. Won’t go wrong at Vanguard, Fidelity or Schwab.

like

Both are great! I use Vanguard and like their funds FWIW.

Vanguard since they have great ETFs and mutual funds. If/when you’re ready to invest in individual stocks, then open with Fidelity or another low cost brokerage.

Am I able to invest in Vanguard ETFs with Fidelity? I like Fidelity’s UI and seems like it’s easy to get help / navigate, with helpful materials. How far off in terms of gains between the two? Seeing from the comments, it’s more so of ownership differences?

No

I have been overworked and overwhelmed at my current job for quite a while. This is my first position out of law school, small firm with large caseload, and in my second year of practice. I often think I should look for another opportunity elsewhere but I don't know that any other firms would give me the potential for growth and experience that I am getting here. What are other 2nd year associates doing at other firms? Trying to gauge if I really am getting more opportunities here

Background: got a promotion at current company that didn't come with sufficient increase . After stating my case I was told it would be evaluated next October, which is what prompted the initial job search.

I am an associate at a UMM and my employment contract has a 4 month non compete (yes, even for associates) but I am thinking of lateraling. What are the implications of breaking a non compete? I didn’t say anything when I signed because I was desperate for a PE offer but it seems so unfair as I am just a lowly associate. I am not so much worried about getting sued, but about my current employer tanking my reputation if I leave and break the non compete.

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.
