Absolutely, I used to HAVE to be drunk to get on a plane, my anxiety was through the roof. Little did I know that it was all the drinking that had elevated my anxiety so much. Today I can fly being responsible for a family of 4 without much stress, even when we showed up 43 minutes before take-off, and they wouldn't accept our bags.
Airports and hotels are huge triggers for a few reasons for me. First, all norms of reasonable behavior seem to disappear. Having a 7am beer with a tequila chaser seems totally reasonable to the public… an alcoholic’s dream.
My addiction specialist added further context. All of the decisions you’ve repeatedly made in places/scenarios have developed a pattern. Like a river forming a canyon. When you are sober you make new decisions which form new patterns in your brain, but it takes a lot of time and repetition. New patterns that you repeat every day take hold a LOT faster…like not mixing a drink when you get home from work. You likely don’t travel very often, which means your brain still associates airports with shots.
That’s why you can go to some restaurants a lot and not have a craving but when you go to a place you haven’t been to since you stopped drinking, the urge comes on strong.
Totally. Drinking culture in consulting isn’t helpful for that too.

Oh yeah. My Thursday routine when coming home on travel was airport drinks before boarding (if time allowed), then at least two red wines on the flight (and of course a fruit 🍓 and cheese 🧀 plate because I’m classy), then Uber home to drop off my bags and immediately head to a local wine bar that also serves food. Obviously I’m expensing all of it, and the night is just beginning after dinner at the wine bar, since 99% of the time I worked from home on Fridays and had little to do.
I did that for years…

I would have been so screwed if I was still drinking during the pandemic and the switch to WFH…I shudder to think of what I would have been like.
Abso-friggin-lutely.
