Is Al Anon really helpful for spouses/children affected by alcoholism or other addictions? Does anyone have insight on this

I love the authenticity and wisdom conveyed on this thread, this sober bowl and the AA community. Where else can you find a group of adults that speak so freely of their challenges with the goal of helping others?

I wish the whole country would do the 12 steps. The problem is not many will take that first step of admitting they are powerless over (Netflix, Facebook, newsmedia, drama, drugs, sex, alcohol, love, food…) and that their lives have become unmanageable. When I look at the public discourse, it seems to me we are a country of people with unmanageable lives (although certainly not for me to judge others.) point being, the steps are so incredibly powerful I want everyone to benefit.

Thank you to this community, I love you. 🙏🏼💚

Thank you for saying this. I know I would have appreciated a forum like this when I was struggling with drinking, so I figured I’d start this bowl and see where it leads. Amazing that there are 6k people!

No one can do it alone!

I went to only one meeting, but it was helpful for me to realize both how much my parent’s substance abuse had affected me and that I was not alone. I didn’t return because I am in one-on-one therapy now and that’s been how I’m addressing it, but Al-Anon seemed like it would be really useful.

Proud of you for taking these steps. I've got two daughters, that I've sense gotten full custody of, that I put through the ringer. Grateful for them that I had close family. Keep pushing. I'll never know how that feels...

The easy answer is yes. It's also dependant on demographic. If you live in a small town.. you may want to venture out to somewhere actually anonymous to avoid unnecessary chatter.

I was a heroin addict for the better part of a decade. Been sober almost 5 years now and I actually will go to Al Anon myself to try gaining perspective. There is a lot to be taken away from any 12 step related program if you don't let yourself get caught up on the small stuff or people.

I'm glad to answer any related questions. ☺️

My experience has been that AlAnon is a great resource for any non-alcoholic that has been impacted by the disease, though much like our experience in AA, the desire to attend has to come from within. Make the suggestion, though it's up to the family member to go.

I know of sober alcoholics that attend to seek help in regards to their struggling child or spouse, it's a very different message than what we get in AA.

I think you just need to find one that fits. My family went to one and they didn’t like it, but I met some people who their family like the group they go to.

Following as I’d like to get my SO into AlAnon, curious to hear experiences.

I’ve been working AA and been sober for 8 years. I used to push my wife into going to alanon bc I thought it would help. My kind and supportive sponsor told me to “quit that shit immediately”. I did not and it caused many issues. Needless to say, she does not got to alanon and it’s better that I don’t bring it up.

I’m in a rather peculiar situation. I have been in the HR field going on 4 years, I have over 11 years of management experience, I got my PHR last year and I recently graduated with my MBA with a concentration in HR this month. I am ready for a more challenging role. However, there doesn’t seem to be much available at my current company. However, I am going on 5 months pregnant with the expectation of being out in October. I feel like once I mentioned my pregnancy I was in a holding pattern.

I feel trapped abroad and locked in a dysfunctional system. We're just in limbo, it's depressing

Hi y’all,
I shared an intermediate workout program (Back/Legs/Arms&Shoulders/Leg/Chest split) with a few friends the other day and figured I could also share it with others if interested.

It’s a program I follow outside of my 12-16 training block preps, and if anyone wants, I can share it with them. It’s for strength training.

Also happy to explain what any of the exercises are if someone wants the workouts and doesn’t know the benefit or how to do them.

Feel free to DM me about it

Cheers

Hi! I have recently taken a step back from my Doctorate in Physical Therapy and am trying to find my next move. My family keeps recommending medical sales, my bank account recommends finishing the degree that cost me an arm and a leg, and my heart is conflicted in so many areas of interest - PT, Psych, sales, etc. I am currently working as a patient care technician but do not see this as my end goal. Any recommendations on sales vs PT vs psychology vs really anything? Thank you!!

My spouse and I met at a rave 7 years ago. At the time we were dabbling in various recreational drugs (acid, mushrooms, weed, k, molly, alcohol etc), but over the years we've slowly cut back drug use.

I've always been v connected to the rave scene, and before I ever tried drugs I would attend events sober. These days, w my career and where I'm at in life, I'm back to going sober.

2months ago, he decided to white knuckle sobriety (except alcohol 🙄) and has become v judgemental of ravers contd

He did try patches and gum for a day and didn't like them. We've been together for 14 years and are thinking about having a baby. Should I just accept the fact that he will get cancer and die while putting me and our child through pain?
