In my experience, they are both stressful, and the actual workload is about the same. However, I do enjoy the community and culture of a smaller company.
I left a big company to freelance remotely. I saved some money, leveraged my experience, and got some testimonials before officially quitting. My workload doesn't drive me crazy anymore, and I can spend dedicated time with my family.
What drove me to make the switch was the big company I was working at wasn't listening to my concerns at all. I didn't feel respected or valued. Although smaller companies are still building up, communication and feedback are welcomed and appreciated.
Have you expressed your concern about your excessive workload? Has there been any change? Some large companies will adjust your workload, but it just takes them awhile to hire and train more people.
Key word is exactly that: it could take a while. They do see the problems and how unhealthy and stressful is but they always say: we’re building a case to hire a junior or something. Time line is roughly oct 23. Like, I can’t wait that long :(
There are many reasons why people might choose to leave a big company for a smaller one. Some people might feel stifled by the bureaucracy of a large company, or they might find that their talents are being underused.
I was drawn to the more intimate atmosphere of a smaller company, where I can have a more direct impact on my work. Whatever the reason, making the switch can be a daunting prospect, but it can also be very rewarding.
