Six weeks today. Two observations:
1. For someone who drank just about every day for most of his adult life, cold turkey has been surprisingly easy. I realize I am lucky, and part of me is waiting for the other shoe to drop.
2. The more places I go sober (drinks after work, a ball game, a concert, central park on the weekend), the more I realize the amount of drinking that goes on. Wasn't really aware before but everyone is wasted, all the time.
Absolutely. And I was pre-diabetic (real thing) but went on a Hershey’s with Almonds jag that should have won me their account. I made a hard conscious decision to cut out and, like alcohol, the cravings went away pretty fast (>week)
Come to think of it, I do eat ice cream a bit more & never really liked sweets much before. I still lost a ton of weight by not drinking - and feel 1,000 x healthier.
Definitely/same here. Just roll with it/cut yourself some slack. A little weight gain early in sobriety is totally normal (and way better than drinking)! Easier to lose weight than it is to quit drinking. In terms of practical tips, I’ve found regular exercise to be helpful to my overall sanity/sobriety, may be worth trying to integrate that into your routine. Otherwise, just go easy on yourself—you’re undertaking a massive change in your approach to living, this is a comparatively small trade-off. PS congrats on the month!
Yes, cut yourself some slack. I got sober 13 years ago and I gained weight in early sobriety (about 10 pounds) and stayed at that higher weight for about 2-3 years. Then I slowly lost it again and have been back to where I began ever since, give or take a few pounds. Remember, this process as slow AF. Give yourself significant time to get a handle on sobriety without making yourself nuts about your weight. This is not to say you shouldn’t exercise or try to eat healthy, but don’t focus on that right now.
💯. It’s ok.
Me too. I would get frozen yogurt every night. On a beach vacation with family rn (I have 6 months) and eating more salt and sugar than I should. I’ve lost 20 lbs since stopping. I’m going to cut back on the sweets and snacks now. Working on my mental and emotional fortitude. That’s the big deal. Otherwise I’m just as disappointed and fearful and arrogant and insecure as I was while drinking. Using the program instead of booze to manage that now.
Thanks all. It's died down a little lately, but I'm still craving sugar like mad. Way more than I ever did alcohol, actually.
Absolutely the sugar cravings skyrocketed. When I quit drinking I swapped a 12 pack a night for a gallon of Oreo ice cream every night! I too needed the weight as I weighed about 110 (5 foot 11). I was a beanpole.
Totally normal. Doctors encourage it- chocolate and salty foods. Healthy for you at this point, and sure beats d&d.
Two months today. Extremely pleased with myself.
Sugar cravings still there but much less than a month ago.
Thanks all for the support on here. What a great group of people.
totally. it all Balances out over the course of the first year
