Got the offer letter, how do I negotiate government salary (higher GS step) without disclosing current salary? Last gov gig I applied to I showed my current and got screwed over didn’t even take it.

Your current salary does not matter (former USG here). Most people transitioning from industry/academia have to take a pay cut. The things that matter when negotiating are education level and years of work experience.

like

I just googled as January 2020 it’s illegal to ask for past salary so ima just say that

like

You are right - they are not going to ask current salary but you can tell them voluntarily to set expectations. From my experience, it is so easy to show current paystubs voluntarily and get a good bump. Getting approval without it is tough unless your hiring manager is willing to fight for it.

like

Update they asked for current salary and paystubs - I told them about the law and they responded with it doesn’t apply to federal positions - if they want to be stingy they’ll just never attract good talent and I’m done trying to fight this smh

like

Why don’t you want to disclose your current salary? If it’s higher than the offer, that’s the most effective argument for increasing the offered step.

Plus they usually have to justify a higher step (in writing) and it may require approval from way up. Check out OPM guidance on superior qualifications—if you have the case to support that they may be willing to go to bat. But may take some prodding by you, and generally the government will match a current salary to the nearest step but not exceed it.

Someone will inevitably say I’m wrong based on some exceptional case but it doesn’t sound like this is going to be one of those.

like

Matching your current salary is the easiest way to get the amount you want. If you currently make less, that's a lot tougher. You can try with education/work experience. It's not like the private sector- they're not going to bump you up just to get you.

like

That’s a New York law, not a Federal law, and it doesn’t apply to government jobs.

FYI last position they asked for current salary. How do I avoid that - all help much appreciated- leaving a full time position (non-gov) for a temporary gov gig

I say “I have a personal policy not to disclose, but I feel really good about the range we’ve discussed and I’m confident we can find a number that works well for both of us”

Doubt they will bump your Step without proof of current salary. If you're negotiating, don't forget you can also try to get credit for additional leave accrual based on years experience (assuming you have more than 3 years in a similar role).

Doesn't always work but it's nice to get that extra 2 hours per pay period if they're willing to do it.

I left consulting earlier this spring. They low balled the first offer, but I said I wanted to at least Match what my new salary would be after the yearly raise. I gave them my pay stub and they matched the salary increase just off my word.

Learned I was making less than peers at other asset managers in NYC with less experience (14 years). Latest conversation was with HR about how they calculate salaries. I’ve been asked to provide examples how my role has changed since I started to justify the increase. Is this normal? Or is this just their way of denying my request?

Tell me your craziest experience working with a TV network. Here comes mine:

I'm American, but my family is mostly Colombian. I was told my aunt and cousins would come here for 2 weeks. I discovered they were going to be paid to appear in a famous Hispanic TV show, where a "judge" receives a case, hears the plaintiffs and defendants and renders a verdict. But of course, it's all fake and payed 😂 turns out she wanted me to go there (even though I don't work for that TV network) so she's sure she'll be paid at the end of the show. Wth did I just do.
