I think that completely depends on where you are in the country. In a large and/or liberal area, you almost have to be more cautious of being “collected” than discriminated against. In smaller/more conservative areas I imagine it’s a different vibe.
My kids know their family is a little different. Our close circle of parent friends is diverse in other ways but we’re the only LGBTQ family. And there’s an occasional whispery question from the new kid that comes over to play (at least when that used to be a thing) but it mellows out quickly. We also make it a point to shoot a casual hello to the teachers every year, to very nonchalantly hint to them that inclusivity in their conversations and lessons is acute this year.
Our community is welcoming enough that if someone has a problem with us, it’s theirs. But we know to feel grateful and lucky we’ve never encountered it.
This is uplifting in so many ways 😊
Be prepared for questions from other kids who meet you for the first time - especially in a school environment (whenever that gets back to normal). Years ago, my husband and I both had the day off and decided to surprise our sons by coming to have lunch with them at school. We got weird looks and a lot of questions from our older son’s classmates (the 4th graders); but none from our younger son’s class (1st grade). The younger kids looked at us hugging our son and I immediately heard one of them say, “Asher has two dads.” And that was it. The younger kids were much more open to the idea that same-sex parents could exist.
