McKinsey & Company Have an offer with McKinsey & Company. Gave notice at Deloitte and my PPMD has set up time for Discussion with a subject of possible negotiation. I love my team and work at Deloitte. My reasons to interview at Mckinsey were comp, exposure to senior client leadership, exit opps and because its Mck. Now i am just rethinking because of option partner might give in terms of comp. For those who made the similar switch have you found it to be worth it? Leaving your network?
Tell partner that comp is not the main reason. If you take an offer to stay because of comp, you'll be at their mercy come promotion cycle.
And, note - companies are trying Incredibly hard to not let people go. Very tight in terms of people and lot of demand from clients. So some of these conversations are also motivated by that and not because they really care for you. Of course, you'll know better what this person's intent is.
Regardless, don't accept to stay back because of comp.
I have a friend that is leaving his firm and every senior person in his practice is calling him, trying to get him to stay. They are using every argument: money, promotion and etc.
100% leave to go to Mck. Way better exits, comp, people, etc

I would just attend and listen to what is being said and offered attentively but would not change my decision.
I’m leaving for Accenture and my PPMD’s tried to do the same thing. From my experience, it’s fairly common for them to do that and it burns a bridge if you reneg on McKinsey to stay at D. McKinsey will be able to give you things that D never will. Additionally, if you stayed at D, people will know that you were wanting to leave and that will look over people’s perception of you for a long time. TLDR, take the McK offer and run
@OP. Made a very similar move, but to BCG. Loved my team, and the work. Left for similar reasons.
TLDR: you’ll build great new relationships, and in most other ways M > D.
There are still times when I look back at the relationships I had at Deloitte and I’m sad to not work directly with those people anymore.
That said, some of those people have already left as well, and others will likely leave shortly. My new team at BCG has been extremely welcoming, and I think I’ll pretty quickly reach parity with my old relationships at Deloitte.
On top of that, comp (current and future) is way better, I’m learning more, and working on some cool projects. When I want to leave consulting, I’m sure the brand will help.
There’s definitely a period of short-term discomfort, but overall it was clearly the right decision for me.

Leave Asap Deloitte is a dead end compared to mck
Deloitte isn’t dead, it’s a higher talent churn than normal…..the day Deloitte dies is when he’ll freezes over.
Before you hit me with a koolaid joke, I’m looking to leave the firm but even I get Deloitte will continue to be here.
If you weren't given a retention bonus few months ago, it's a clear sign!

Without a doubt, MCK will be a lot better for your career. The comps, exposure, projects, progression, brand, exit opps will be far superior...
I think you can frame your conversation with your PPMD in a way that you don't burn any bridges.
Tell them you really enjoyed your time at D and thank them for the opportunities etc. You will really miss the people. However, you felt that it is time to move on and see what is it like in MCK etc. Make the reasons personal.
The key is don't even talk about comp...

What level? I just bounced from PwC under similar circumstances. Haven’t started yet.
As an SM I would highly consider factors beyond comp (examples in no particular order):
1. Network
2. WLB
3. Day to day activities and tasks
4. Odds of making P
5. Odds of exiting to industry (if yes, what type of role?)
Personally, the type of work done at McK is not a good fit for my experience. This is my specific circumstance but could apply to others. In that sense, it’s irrelevant what comp would be if I don’t enjoy the work or would have to ‘start over’ this late in my career.
I moved from Deloitte to McKinsey last year. Super happy with the comp and transition but I moved as an associate so it’s definitely very different for me. Depending on your expertise and niche, maybe worth discussing with other EMs/APs in the practice/specialty area in McKinsey to determine what progression at the firm could look like.

Only question would be if you were a shoe in for partner soon at D. Like no questions it would happen. Otherwise take the offer and go.

Edits will be better at McK if you are planning to leave consulting. Pay will be better at McK if you are going to be a career consultant
@OP, contemplating a similar move but haven’t dropped my resignation yet. Was there any consternation in sharing where you are going? Also how long of a notice did you give?

I did a similar jump this year > Kpmg to McKinsey.
Loved my team and loved my work. My short answer would be to take the jump. McKinsey is huge and the brand value and exit ops it offers is too good to turn down. And if it doesnt work out you can always go back?
When tou get an offer at McKinsey… you go. Especially from big 4. I moved from PwC to expert. Beat decision ever.
They offered me more money and a stay bonus. Made all that back and more within a year
Go to McKinsey. No discussion needed.
