And to be honest I've just been mirroring the way that my male coworkers talk when they critique something i've done
Ive had this experience and have noted the total difference in the reaction to hearing similar data coming from me verses others. I have come to the conclusion that this reaction comes from a very "basic" place. When people (men and women) hear anything critical from a feminine voice, I think they revert back to the feeling they have when their mommies criticize them. It takes a more enlightened person to transcend that "gut" reaction and move into a more nuanced and emotional intelligent one. As PM's I would hope we would more of the emotional intelligent folks in our groups but, that is not always the case.
As PMs we were hired for our opinions and we’re furthermore paid for our insight and knowledge of our user. But they don’t want it unless we’re docile and agreeable
Is he the only one that has said this? If so, I would just say it's a personal thing and he has to deal with it, but if you find yourself receiving the same critique from multiple people then at that point you can reevaluate
Maybe consider how your communication style may be perceived by others and adapt accordingly if necessary. This doesn't mean compromising your integrity or withholding valuable insights, but finding ways to effectively communicate your ideas while being mindful of the dynamics and preferences of your audience.
