The certification can help especially early in your career when you do not have a lot of industry experience. My advice to you is not to silo yourself in one functional area of HR, gain experience and knowledge of them all including payroll processing.
It's not particularly. I have a bachelors degree and an MBA e in human resource management and I took the certifications, I studied for 5 minutes literally and got the highest marks on all of them. It makes you look better supposedly but not really. I think they're kind of a joke
Absolutely true
I’ve had various HR roles and not a single certification. If you jump directly into that role some may look for it but it all depends on the company. Also a huge aspect to think about is what type of HR do you want to work with? I.e. Talent Acquisition, Compliance, Business Partner, Employee Relations, Development…what you wanna do helps to guide you more into what you like. I’ve done everything under the HR sun but prefer Employee Relations/Engagement, Investigations, and Development. My role right now is absolutely everything!! And I mean EVERYTHING…and I absolutely love it! My days are always different, whereas in my previous few roles all I did was onboarding/compliance and acquisition. I did the same thing over and over and over.
Right now, I am doing everything and trying to learn as much as I can. From onboarding, employee relations and payroll processing. It’s different every day. Hopefully overtime, I can identify what aspects of the role that I would like to focus on. Thanks for the feedback.
I only took the SHRM certification test to be able to add it to my resume to be able to find a better job. I don’t feel that it has been necessarily useful in my career so far.
I do not think it is strictly necessary, but it can help. Experience still matters more. I would focus on impact and progression alongside any qualification.
