I think it’s fine if your top is long and covers your butt.

I have seen the full range of inappropriate in the office and unless someone complains, no one cares. Is it professional work attire? Depends on the company culture and you or your mgmt. definition.
What are some examples of inappropriate that you’ve seen?
So leggings aren’t pants, period. No matter how amazing someone looks in them, don’t wear leggings as pants. Wear leggings under skirts or a long sweater that comes down around the buttocks area.

Op. Why would wearing shorts be a problem?
I think it honestly comes down to your body type unfortunately. I would personally never wear leggings because my butt/legs would draw attention. I would however wear a low ish cut shirt and no one would bat an eye, where someone with more going on up there couldn’t without drawing attention. I’m not saying anyone should be body shamed or that it’s “fair”, but I think in a corporate setting you don’t want anyone you work with to notice your figure/clothes first or pay a lot of attention to them (unless it’s just that you have great style).
MC1, it’s not exactly the same, but men who are very fit or slim can look stylish and professional in things like shorts, t-shirts, track pants, and tight clothing. It just doesn’t look sloppy on them so people don’t notice. This isn’t necessarily about being sexualized. In general you don’t show certain body parts at work. If you have “more” of that body part to be exposed, it’s more noticeable. I have a large chest so I don’t wear low-cut tops at work. It’s not that I’m worried about men gawking. It’s that there’s more revealed and it’s hard for literally everyone to miss.

In tech, totally. Just be thoughtful about how tight and visible your physique is between your hips, front and back, and consider a shirt that covers if needed.
Agree! Pair with a looser shirt or sweater!
Sadly it will all come down to how old upper crust management is and if they are still thinking like boomers or not truly
Hahaha true, luckily management at my company is pretty young
Can you? Yes. Should you?
Also yes? 😂
I also work for a tech company and it's a casual environment. Leggings are fine in the work place with a sweater (or similar) that covers the butt. I, personally, would never wear leggings for business casual, like to a client meeting, but I've seen women pull it off and look professional. I'm in my mid-forties for that reference.
Yeah predominately pairing with a loose or unfitted top that covers the behind!

Ehhh, it’s appropriate but not the best office pick. I suggest prioritizing other pants options first.
Some days you just wanna feel comfy!
It depends on the company culture, tbh. Some places have more strict standards than others. When we still had a physical office, our office dress code was simply to be clothed, and checkered golf pants were banned (joking). You might get talked to if you were wearing something openly offensive, like if it had an explicit message that made people uncomfortable, but nobody ever did that.
Seriously though, we had people in hoodies, cargo shorts, battle jackets, leggings, etc. sitting right next to people in slacks a button-down shirt. You wore what you felt comfortable in and, unless you were in Sales or something heavily customer-facing in person, it really didn't matter. It was never a problem because that was the company culture and everyone was cool about it, whereas some of that might not have been appropriate in a different setting. One of our high-level account managers even had some leftover candy penises from a bachelorette party on her desk to share with the bullpen. It wasn't a problem because we were adults about it and appreciated the candy.
TLDR; what's important is to read the room rather than stick to arbitrary rules. If you think it's fine for YOUR office, nobody on fishbowl would know any better. If you wear leggings one day and get a weird vibe, then you know it didn't fly.
Thanks for your advice! I feel like at my office it’s all over the place. Definitely have more formal folks and then super casual as well
I’ve seen it at some of my tech clients. I don’t think it’s blatant enough for it to be worth the awkwardness of someone speaking up about it. Usually I see the fit as leggings + a quarter zip or vest
Yeah I think if they’re solid dark colors (vs wacky yoga pants) they’re prob somewhat subtle when paired with a nicer top
Ehh if your shirt comes down low enough and it’s not to revealing of your figure might be received better.
Yeah not trying to show off anything! Leggings are just way more comfortable!
Yes if whatever you wear on top could also be worn with tights or stockings—i.e., it comes down to the top of your legs. I would not wear leggings as pants. At Amazon I doubt anyone is going to call you on it, but it’s not a great look for work and could weigh against you in people’s private estimations of your potential, because dressing appropriately falls under good judgment.
I realized I have may have misunderstood your question. There are garments on the continuum between leggings and pants that include “jeggings” and bootcut leggings and pants made from comfortable stretch fabric, like Kira Grace. If I had to articulate a guideline, it would be that if the garment tightly hugs the underside of your rear AND is made of a fabric often used in leggings, then treat as leggings. I do realize there are people who wear normal jeans and trousers in sizes so small they reveal even more, but I am setting aside people who don’t own three-way 🪞s.
Probably not regular exercise leggings that form to your body in a very thin fabric.
I like Betabrand as a good middle ground. They have fake pockets so they look like dress pants, but they are essentially leggings with a thicker fabric. They are comfy, but still modest enough that people aren't going to make note of them.
Jeggings! Yea there are so many work pant-leggings for sale now that pretty much look like pants! Pretty comfy
If you’re in professional services or client facing, then no. It’s just not professional. It’s like a guy rocking up to a corporate office in short gym shorts
Not client facing fortunately!
I would say not to. I don't really think that leggings are appropriate work wear honestly.
What about with boots and a loose sweater? So they don’t look like gym attire necessarily
Like reefing, if you have to ask, it's too late.
Hahaha 😂
Leggings under a skort might work. Any pants-like apparel tends to raise some eyebrows and drop some jaws when body shape is outlined and leaves nothing to the imagination.
I didn’t think of pairing with a skirt, thanks!
NO.
Hahah thanks - good to know the sentiment at United!
You can wear active pants that "look" like dress pants. (Athleta has some great ones) most people aren't going to know the difference. But also I think people judging what others wear ever at all is dumb... leggings don't make someone worse at their job.
I guess “jeggings” are back! Thanks for your advice!
