And yet, when non violent protests occur, i.e., players taking a knee during the national anthem, they're vilified. 'Murica. Home of the free to protest, land of the brave enough to keep our heads in the sand.
And as educated professionals, we should all be aware that "disrespecting" the flag/anthem/ one's country is a right each citizen has; going down the path of "you took a knee during the national anthem, leave!" is a dangerous turn - what free country doesn't allow dissension? That's North Korea territory, I'll pass. I'd rather support a non-violent act of protest any day than force people to show false honor to a flag or song out of fear of being forced to leave if they don't.
Institutional racism exists in this country(there is evidence of it out there, recent DOJ investigations demonstrate that) and citizens affected by it have the right to protest (and their allies of course). I am a patriot because I love this country and the freedoms we have compared to others; loving a country doesn't mean you can't point out areas it can do better or is plain wrong.
Taking a knee during the anthem to get a national conversation started vs rioting in the streets? I'd say that's a pretty good role model on how to peacefully protest.
And we said many times we sympathize with the issues that blacks face in this country, we just don't support violent riots. Not sure where you picked up that we don't sympathize.
We've just identified one of the biggest hindrances right here. Both sides assume what the other is thinking/feeling. How about we just ask and listen?
Your dismissive attitudes are what infuriates those oppressed. Of course there are riots - they are ANGRY! Their people are being shot at with little reason, they are discriminated against every day, they are facing worse punishments for the same crimes than white people. Putting up your nose at their "riots" is akin to not fully understand their plight.
🙄 again, ivory tower.
And yes I accept that they are angry and also can look down on them commuting violent riots. Just because you're upset doesn't give you the right to destroy property, loot and commit violence. It doesn't help the situation and doesn't push us towards a solution. I'd argue the violent riots drive us further apart and exacerbate the problem.
Your ivory tower responses are misguided. I'm making valid arguments and all you can come back with is "ivory tower" because you've got nothing of substance to add to the discussion.
And you are ignoring MY argument, which is that you can afford to be logical and detached when you are not one of those afflicted? Can you please acknowledge your extreme privilege in that sense? I'm not opposing that here be actual solutions ( I already said that there are people who are proposing them but they do not get the media attention the riots do), nor am I an advocate for violence. ✋🏼
Absolutely I have privilege, but that doesn't invalidate that a logical approach is the right approach. Again I'll use MLK as an example. He was angry and he was in the middle of it all, but he proved that non violence was the answer. I'm not saying I don't sympathize with the rioters or that they shouldn't be angry. I'm saying they need to rise above these feelings and not perform violent riots that hurt more than they help.
This is also probably the medias fault as well, since violent riots sells more ads than people working together to create a narrative towards a solution. So the media plays the issues which are the most incendiary so they can sell ad space to viewers.
^^^this. So...what part can we each play moving forward?
I call bs on white privilege. I call bs on systemic racism in america. Sa1 is the perfect example of the problem with BLM and their supporters. "It's not their fault they're doing this they don't have the privilege of sitting in ivory towers and thinking logically." SA1 are you saying African Americans don't have the ability to think logically? I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt that that's not what you meant. If everyone took responsibility for their lives and actions and understood actions have consequences instead of excusing violence because there's this mystical systemic racism we wouldn't have these issues. Personal responsibility is key.
^exactly.
Of course I am not saying that. I'm going to assume you're not an idiot by assuming that.
If you're not black, you don't get to say there isn't systemic racism. Just please stop. It's a good thing this is anonymous (for you).
SA1...where do we go from here? Our lenses are entirely different but we're seeing the same picture. What's the next step?

SA1 why because if you knew who I was you'd attack me? Sure I have biases which I acknowledge. I am wary of people wearing ripped clothing and have tattoos all over their body without knowing them (regardless of their race). I understand that not everyone of those people I described above aren't bad but like sm said it's a bias I have and I'm fine with maintains that bias. I'm biased against people like SA1 who say ridiculous things like I can only know something if I'm black. I'm also biased against SJW's in general and I know they're not all idiots but I can't help myself but think that they are.
No, I wouldn't hit you, a person with your viewpoint is not someone I wanna risk jail time for. "A bias I have I'm fine to maintain with." ..... Alrighty, this is where I stop entertaining this conversation. No use arguing with someone who has this viewpoint.
S1 blowing the trumpet hard
