Hey everyone. My name is Diana & I’m from Metro ATL.

I’m transitioning from the psychology/social work field to become a Data Analyst!! I realized this was the field for me after I worked in a research lab for 2 years & loved it. Right now I’m taking the Google DA Certification & trying to really take my time learning SQL & R Programming.

My question is, for entry level positions would I have to be tested on things like SQL or R before getting hired & how hard/rigorous would this testing be?

I haven't seen testing in R but definitely SQL. Level of difficulty depends on the company and position.

Congrats on discovering your interest in data! You're on the right track as far as programming goes. SQL is the must have, luckily SQL is relatively simple compared to python and R.

In my experience (~5 YOE) most companies aren't using R as a main language. It's a language many analysts use on the side help manipulate data more easily. So think of R as a bonus, add-on.

Even better, there are entry level data jobs that don't require much coding. If you wanna get started right away, look for jobs like 'Sales Analyst' where the requirements are mainly Excel and Tableau. Many companies are still early in their data implementation, so don't underestimate how far being able to make great Excel PivotTables can get you.

Last note: I'd avoid data entry jobs, as there won't be as much skill growth opportunity. Hope this helps!

Thinking of splitting evenly across large, mid, small caps, and growth, value funds using DCA.
