Hi fellow ADHDers, I have a situation and could use some advice. We have a contract employee who is showing severe signs of ADHD. Lack of focus and general unprofessionalism inappropriate interjections into conversations and off topic comments that they then take way to far. This person is at the very beginning g of their professional career. What advice would you give me or him to navigate this? I was diagnosed as a kid so I have tons of coping skills. 👇

That absolutely sounds like me in my early career and I wish someone senior would have gave me a serious and proper hint before I got fired twice in a row 🥲 Maybe in an after-hour setting, telling maybe your own story (without necessarily mentioning the diagnose by name) and ask if someone ever told them they could be impacted by attention deficit. If you really want to help (what I would do as well) it shouldn’t be a problem for you to show vulnerability. Anyway I really appreciate your willingness to help and just not bash/throw them under the bus like most people in a corporate setting would probably do

But in a professional setting it is highly inappropriate to call it out to them especially if they were never diagnosed. So how would you go about coaching or training them that not only meets their needs but yours too?

I would coach the employee by focusing on their actions and behaviours, just like any other situation. Depending on your relationship with them and your corporate policies, if issues persist, you may be able to refer them to an EAP program or similar to explore the issue further.

You may be completely right that it’s ADHD, but I’m assuming aren’t a medical professional who normally diagnosed this. Taking that route, if incorrect, can also complicate things in the event that formal action needs to be taken due to their performance.

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

My psychiatrist today revealed to me that I may have ADHD, still a hypothesis that he is still exploring but from my personal experiences and discussions with therapist, it seems likely.

One example of personal experience is my ongoing prep for case studies as I'm interviewing with a number of firms. I do struggle to keep focus and generally take a bit longer to finish them, specifically the structuring of the case. Does anybody else feel the same way and any recommendations to overcome this?

My psychiatrist recommended for me to try Ritalin. I’ve been on Dexedrine for a few months, and I’m not really having negative side effects.

Anyone else have a need to exercise daily?
