In my family if you were a woman you became a teacher, fate sealed, move on. If you were a boy you became an engineer (of some sort) fate sealed, move on. So I did the only reasonable thing and became a lawyer.
I ran from teaching for years!!! No matter what, I always ended up in front of the board room, in front of partners or in front of the class. I hated law, I loved teaching. After 20 years I quit law, moved to teaching. Fate sealed, moving on.
Love it.
I was a teacher when I was 10 years old. I taught younger kids in my neighborhood how to play various games, fly kites, things of the sort. In high school, I helped classmates with work. I became drum major in my senior year and taught marching and maneuvering.
I guess teaching was in my blood from an early age. It just made sense to take that route out of high school.
It’s always been my dream and I have been in it for over 35 years. This year, however, has really been difficult! Both of my paras have had injuries to their thumb/wrist (broken) from students, while I had a toenail torn off by one of those students. The lack of discipline in homes today is atrocious! I had a student throw a pen at my para’s eye, and was going into their IEP meeting in a matter of minutes after that. I told the mom and she started at me like, “what’s wrong with you?”!
I was in retail management and food service from age 17 to 52. I hired, fired, trained, taught, and developed training procedures and manuals. I've volunteered for organizations and managed departments. I always wanted to teach somehow. I graduated 2 months before my 53rd birthday with my ElEd degree and taught in elementary for 4 years and hated it. I have been teaching in high school and LOVE ❤️ it! Both my grandmothers were teachers, one longer than the other. I have 2 cousins who are teachers and one of their children is a teacher and one of their spouses is a teacher. My youngest sister, who is 55, is finishing her teaching degree this year.
I think being a teacher is in our DNA. 🤣
Apparently educators recognize educators and I was redirected from nursing school into the education side of public health. Shruggie dot emoji.
For me it was totally by happenstance but after 30 years, I still feel I made a great choice.
I halfway fell into it, love inspiring kids and seeing them succeed, but this year has been a soul-sucking experience. Lack of respect, admin that switch kids around with no warning in or out, kids with far more mental health issues… y’all know the drill. There’s a good chance this is it for me…
I entered the field when my daughter was younger and I was a single parent. I cannot say that it was something I really wanted to do. I mean I thought about it when I was younger because a lot of the women at my church were teachers. The semester before my student teaching class I told my advisor that I wasn’t feeling education. I saw the writing on the wall as it pertains to the changes in education. My advisor told me to do my student teaching since I had come this far. My original plan was to teach for ten years ( when my daughter graduated from high school) and move on to another career. This is year 19 and I’m over it! I am planning my next chapter.
Well, I've always had a passion for the subject I teach, and I wanted to be involved with it in some capacity. Teaching it to future generations seemed like a good idea, and It turns out I'm pretty good at it. It's also the only profession I could actually envision myself doing for an extended period of time. Long story short, it made sense.
Got my girlfriend pregnant. Had to end my stand up career.
So very true! I performed every day for 20 years AND coached improv troupes! Have a good one!
I started off as an actuarial science major. I should have stuck with that.
I didn’t want to be a teacher when I was younger. I didn’t even think about teaching until after I entered college and realized I could make a huge difference in education.
