How difficult is it to get into asset management, buyside mutual funds/ insurance firms ?

I am a Quantitative researcher ,PhD Statistics ( currently on sabbatical) and I love watching Bloomberg tv for hours,I genuinely find it interesting. Also did my CFA FMVA so have a good hands on Financial modeling and valuation skills.

What could be a gateway role into asset management ? Appreciate any guidance!

Solid resume.

From here it’s about networking and hustle.

Three things I’d do:
1) Create a quant trading strategy in *python*. Doesn’t have to be a world killer, just go through the process of building one, backtesting it, and testing it in the real world. It will give you some great discussion materials in interviews.

2) Engage with quantitative finance people on FinTwit. There’s lots of great content out there and many people will engage with you. Don’t be super pushy or salesy at the start, but make connections. Putting some views or content out there is a good accelerator.

3) Be patient and creative. The hedge fund world is under stress right now and lots of people are getting walking papers. It’s a competitive field and there’s lots of talent on the street right now. But keep after it and be open to small, under the radar opportunities. A gig at Citadel would be awesome, but a role at a small fund could also be fantastic experience.

Thanks,That’s really helpful. I’ll definitely follow it!
