Short answer you don't. One needs to find a new job either internally or externally to get a decent pay increase. Mainly because why would they pay you more without any leverage?
If there is no regular increase I ask about once a year. I think once every 6 months is excessive. Unless you have been promised a raise they are slow walking.
You need to set yourself apart and show your worth. Doing the average job won’t be enough. You don’t need to be an expert, but just showing that you have a willingness to learn and some common sense along with some proven results and being dependable go a long way. I’ve had success either asking for or being offered a raise/promotion every 1-2 years. My current boss when reviewing my most recent raise praised my common sense and work ethic, which goes to show you how rare those are these days.
