How hard is it to learn litigation ?

It’s not hard but you will go insane

I’ve exclusively done litigation for the entirety of my career (about a decade now at state/federal levels in Texas, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut.) and in my opinion, litigation isn’t hard. The various moving parts, the variables of the unknown, and the stress can make it difficult sometimes, sure, but it’s not hard – if that makes any sense.

Here’s why I don’t think litigation is hard:

1) You have your state’s civil procedure and your local rules as your rule books so you know what’s generally expected and/or allowed. Sure, there are always out of left field things depending on opposing counsel and judges, but you usually always have a general idea of what to expect.

2) You know your deadlines. This can be heaven or hell for you as it depends 100% on your attorney(s), but if they’re mindful/follow said deadlines? You’re fine.

3) Prioritization of stress management alleviates most of your potential issues coming into this practice area.

Feel free to message me for any questions you might have! No such thing as a stupid question when you're looking at a new practice area.

Thank you !
I’m just exploring my options and saw litigation roles open around my area and remote.
Just don’t want to be typecasted more than I am due to the practice area I am in currently.

Not hard but once you learn the process, you just kind of have to keep up with any updates such as court rules etc; I recommend joining a paralegal group such as beyond paralegals; they have current paralegals exchanging practice knowledge and you can be trained in any area of interest;

Not hard but you will be stressed out once you jump in. But it can be fun in the beginning…..

Is it possible to be a paralegal who works only in Discovery? Is that even possible in the corporate firms?

The grammar was not intentional. It is very cold, and I am very tired.

If you are fresher, go for a WF Office setup. You will learn things beyond your work. In the initial phase of of your career, one needs to focus more on learning than on comfort. The interactions at office, meeting with collegues, conversations at the cafeteria, sense of responsibilty, the need to walk up on time to reach office etc will shape you for better.

Once you have a work experience of few year then any setup is fine. Go for WFH.

Additional Posts in Paralegals

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

My boss (atty) is so disorganized! I’ve been with him 6 months and he’s having a hard time delegating, sharing info and managing deadlines. I’ve organized the caseload to manage the deadlines. He says he wants me to help with discovery but when I offer to start on one, he says he needs to do it. (Since he might have to present as evidence) When I give him deadlines and ask for the docs he says he’ll get to it. It’s a small 1 man firm, and I’m the first assistant besides his wife. Any advice?

Hi everyone. Is it typical for the attorney to take credit for the work a paralegal does? An example: I gave some ideas about deposition questions and some observations I made (I was asked about giving suggestions) regarding a witness and the attorney mentioned that he’s the one that had these great questions/observations. Zero credit or thank you for the work I did.

Paralegals: My firm is looking for a paralegal, and I see the job posting advertising the salary as $65-$75k, with benefits. Is this a good salary for a paralegal (Greater LA area)? Did you have to take a lower position to gain the experience or were you able to argue that your soft skills were transferable to in house?
