How many years do you think you should be working in sales (SaaS specifically) before applying to sales manager roles? 5 years?

It’s not about the title. It’s about what you can earn

If you don’t feel that you’ve done and learned all you can as an individual contributor don’t even consider becoming a people manager.

Sales management can be incredibly rewarding in both personal and financial ways.

If the notion of being a combination coach/marriage counselor/therapist/proctologist/deal closer/pet detective/strategist/tactician doesn’t just have you leaping from bed every morning raring to tackle the day then stay an IC and stack paper.

The difference in compensation between first level sales manager and top-tier IC is small. Often, the IC takes home more. With less stress and more direct control over their time and income level.

At the end of your career you will, hopefully, retire. At that point nobody will care very much what your job was. You will care very much how happy you were along the way and you will care almost as much about how much money you have to live out your golden years.

I’d say about 3 years. I was a sales manager for 6 years , and most recently returned to an individual contributor role.I’ll earn more money and be in control of my own destiny.Do it for the right reasons and don’t chase the title.

Till you die?

Look at the past exp of the best managers in your industry. Best thing to do is to talk to them and ask them what the best path is

It’s more of a matter of whether you want to sell or manage. I started managing after 1 year while some folks just close bigger and bigger deals and never want to deal with managing people.

I will say, I wish I stayed in the IC role much longer, it makes you a better manager/leader. I’m now back in the IC role because life priorities have changed.

As long as you are qualified and meet to requirements, it shouldn’t be a specific time frame

Sales manager also need to identifies critical touchpoints and evaluates them regularly to achieve a desired standard of excellence manager also need to

But a lot of posts here making me think it’s harder to break into than I expected (non-technical background). If you had a six sigma green belt / supply chain degree/exp., would you still go through the effort of going into Cyber or take easy risk money being offered / easier transition back to supply chain? 2-3 YOE and trying to decide career course, any advice highly appreciated

At what point does the value of a degree fall off? I'm in my early 30s, and have five years of experience, and work on a very theoretically interesting project. I believe I'm on track to promotion in the next year. So, I could put in a year of full time school to check the box off, but I'd be sacrificing hobbies and social life (not to mention cost). Is this FOMO or is there real opportunity here?
