How much money do you think you'll need to save to retire? It's got to be at least a million, right?

My goal is $2M at 65. I'm 8 years away so hoping the stock market keeps growing LOL

likefunny

I do believe $2mil is the minimum for me. I’m 21 years from retirement. If inflation keeps its pace, I’ll need $10M which means I may never retire.

like

The standard formula is (expenses / withdrawal rate) x inflation raised to however many years you have until retirement.

Assume your annual expenses are 100K, withdraw rate is 4%, inflation is 3%, and you are 10 years from retirement:

((100,000 / .04) x 1.03v10) = $3.36M

Interesting math. With longer life expectancies, I wonder if that will be enough.

Hi all, I have a question regarding retirement accounts. I am not sure if I should choose a Roth or 401k (company has 4+2% match). Currently 23, base salary is ~100k and investments have brought 45k this year which has me teetering between a 22-24% tax bracket. Wondering what the usual tax bracket is of people retired (around 65yo) as I’m not sure anything would bring in significant income with the exception of investments. In my case would a Roth make sense? Appreciate any answers!!

My company just announced that they will stop matching for the 401K until 2021 (sigh). Do you think I should lower my investment percentage to get more liquid assets that I can use for buying an investment property at the end of the year and extra funds available for school as I return for masters? Or is there a better way to get returns?

Our company is considering offering 401K employer match. We are about 200 employees venture backed company. We have about 60% participation mostly the non HCEs and only some key employees contribute. We always pass top heavy test and wpassed the 2019 ADP/ACP test. We are aggressively hiring and project there will be increase in participation, particularly if we offer the match. Given this information would it make sense to continue with a traditional 401k plan or go with safe Harbor plan?

Are 401k’s really worth investing in these days? What are the % returns you guys have been seeing for the last few years? For those that have been working before 2008, how much of an impact did the housing crash have on 401k and how much did the recent COVID pandemic affect it?

And before someone suggests raises, yeah I’d love to, but obviously not my call.

In my organization, most with my role are commission based. I make a set salary due to the firm I work for as an account manager/ coordinator for clients… I coordinate their enrollments, working with each groups HR department as to benefits and payroll purposes, and schedule our benefit counselors accordingly.
