There’s no magic number as we all start off in different circumstances. Irrespective of that, the next best time to start putting money on it is now... Don’t wait... I follow Dave Ramsey’s rules as far as 401k investing. Aka: 1) Roth 401k; 2) 15% of income (expand to IRA on anything over the yearly limit); 3) spread investments in good growth stock mutual funds. For anyone in Tech/Consulting earning 100k or more doing that (even if they start in their 30s) will easily turn you into multi millionaires by their 55-60s.
Just to clarify, employer match does NOT count towards the $19.5k limit
Salary when you are 30 and those are rough guidelines. You need to decide for yourself what makes sense and what kind of life you want to live.
I'm 30, 140k salary. As of yesterday I had 141k in my retirement accounts. Another ~80k in cash and non-retirement accounts. I put 10% into my 401k pretty much from day 1.

The Roth IRA phase out is, I believe, right at 140 for an unmarried person. You can backdoor it, though.

Hmmm... I guess I will be finding a job that pay me less to meet that goal.

Don’t worry about ‘should’ - everyone’s case is different. Get as close to maxing out your 401k as you can & max out ASAP. The rest will take care of itself
Why max out my 401k before investing in stock picks / ETFS that are performing so well for me? Also - if I’m not already in a Roth 401k is it too late to switch?

I meant brokerage and a Roth but to answer your question, yes, you can split between traditional and Roth 401k. You just have to stay below the max total in both accounts combined(ie you can’t have a maxed Roth AND a maxed traditional). As for racing loans this is Reddit’s personal finance flowchart, I like it.
Edit: well that looks terrible, here is a link.

I’ve never heard this 1x salary rule but I would assume that this means 1x your 30 year old salary. This is assuming you have regular raises and career progression, thus increasing your future salary expectation. Wouldn’t make sense to base it off your 24 year old salary if the goal is to keep making more (and thusly saving more in your 401k)
