Going to another firm as a direct admit P is very difficult and time consuming process. You need to be a rock star. That’s just to get in. Once you’re there, it’s really tough to survive given you don’t have a network and you’re competing against people who grew up in the firm. Direct admit Ps don’t have a great success rate at Deloitte. You’re better off making the case to convert to P at Deloitte. It can be done but you need to be a high performer.
I’ve seen a slowdown in big4 partner count, especially on the direct admit side. It’s far more selective than in years past with the probation period used to cull under performers. This means you get far less time than you realize to get acclimated and a need to be a rainmaker early on.
As others mentioned, it’s worth exploring if P at Deloitte is a path forward. It would be the place you would most likely be successful without the stress of rebuilding a network and learning a new culture and operating model.
Having said all that, it’s worth taking a step back and thinking about how Deloitte leadership views you and your strengths and weaknesses. You’d be surprised how much of a bubble people build around themselves compared to how others perceive them.

While there are exceptions, nearly impossible in this market currently.
Knowing a partner who could sponsor your case and vouch internally would be the best way to start. Have a plan ready and well thought out of how you would grow the business - clients/sectors, practice/people growth, etc.
Lastly, and most importantly, get the story straight of why Deloitte steered you onto MD track. What is the opportunity cost of how this impacts their business and how could that be different at another B4. Good luck.
Get offer for partner somewhere else and then resign?
Noted. But how does one get the offer or even go about initiating a discussion?
I understand the more feasible approach would be to know a partner at other Big4 and ask him/her to connect you with an internal ‘partner matters’ recruiter. But unfortunately, I don’t know any other Big4 partners in that capacity.
Does it usually mean reaching out directly to internal recruiters at Big 4?
Curious - Why are you looking to leave?
As crazy as it may sound, I have never brought this up with my coach/advisor. But maybe I need to. Thank you.
I know someone who moved between Big 4s from MD to Partner, they cold reached out to the practice leader in the new firm on LinkedIn. It was a growing area and they found quick success.
Noted, thank you.
What would you bring to the table that would make you a direct admit at another firm, yet an MD at Deloitte? Are you bringing a large book over? Do you have a specialty that other firms might need more than Deloitte? How you answer those questions would influence my advice.
Are you well known in the field? Publications ? PLIs ? What will set you apart from the MDs and SMs at EY / PWC ?
Currently in discussions to do this exact thing. It’s 50% about the financials and benefits and 50% about the team and network for me.
