I am interested in getting into forensic accounting and business valuation. I will be starting at a top 20 national firm next year, and they are pretty flexible in allowing associates to explore what they like for the first year. But then I will need to pick a path. Where is a good place to start? It seems that audit is usually the path people take, but is a tax background valuable as well?

I'd also appreciate any insight into "a day in the life" of a forensic accountant. Is there an okay WLB?

Definitely start in audit as the skills you learn there will be very helpful in forensic accounting. Also get as much writing experience as you can!

you’ll be writing reports non stop if your in forensics or valuation

like

Working in Valuation Disputes - unless you’re able to work on valuations for tax purposes, a tax background won’t add much value for forensics or valuations

If they will let you go directly to the F&V group, do that. Otherwise, audit first then try to transfer.

I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand.
