Take a vacation! Your mental health is more important than work. You are not lazy for wanting a break. Work will take as much as you are willing to give it. Your health, your energy, your life. Take a break.
There’s a book called “The Unhappy Lawyer”. Read it! It changed my life - gave me the courage to leave Wall Street and that 1000 lawyer form in the rear view mirror- I feel sorry for them now- they’re mostly unhappy
Rising Star
Depends where you’re at in your career. First 5 years? The grind is normal as you’re learning your craft. After that, you need to be substantially compensated for lack of WLB
Think about what you could do with your experience outside or related to the legal industry. I started and asset recovery company and I’ve never been happier. They’re not ok with the hours. I was in a 1000 lawyer firm am law 100 - I hated it - but I harnessed the experience into something I love now - I’m trained at a level that few lawyers get to experience - start thinking about how you could channel your skills into something you can be happy doing. Buy a book that will help you figure out your passion - or really is true that if “you do something you love, it’s not work”
For what it’s worth I don’t work nights and weekends and still complain 🤣
Amen! I know I will never make that kind of money that the grinders with massive bonuses make or the rainmakers but all I do is think about the multiple week vacations I take now without working and I laugh at my old self
But and read that book / it will change your life and give you courage
I don't know what field you are in but think about looking for in-house work or work outside of litigation. My first 5-6 years were in litigation and they were brutal. I learned a ton about work ethic and perfectionism but I also switched to in-house and never looked back. Still stressful and I don't make a top salary but I keep human hours and have an excellent work/life balance.
How did you make the jump from litigation to in-house? I’m trying to get out to gain sanity and my time back with family but cannot get an interview for anything but litigation roles.
It does sound like you're pretty early in your career. The beginning is rough. Not everyone survives their first five years.
I went in house after 4 years working how you describe. I now work 9-4 most days, maybe til 5 some days. Make $300k/yr. No evenings or weekends. Life’s too short. Make yourself marketable and get a better job.
Nobody is really okay. Some pretend better than others, even with themselves. Take a vacation. Try to set some boundaries. Just be judicious with this and avoid all-or-nothing thinking.
