I feel guilty every time I step away from my desk for a brain break even though I need it to reset and keep functioning. Everyone around me seems to be laser-focused all day, and I worry that taking 10 minutes to walk or stim or just breathe makes me look lazy. But without those breaks, I spiral: I lose focus, make mistakes, and get stuck in executive dysfunction quicksand. How do you deal with the pressure to work like a neurotypical when your brain simply doesn’t operate that way? Have you found ways to normalize breaks without feeling like you have to justify them?

First of all, you don't actually know what other people are dealing with or going through. They might seem focused, but they could be distracted and struggling and doing so silently. Second of all, do what's best for you. And what you know works for you. It doesn't matter what works for other people.

I always feel the same way. I had a boss at my last job that would monitor how long we were away on slack. It kind of just traumatized me.

Im an internal director at a large firm now and I have days of low level work. I get by on my Uber productive windows and innate problem solving skills.

If you have self identified or if you have some sort of accommodation, you deserve to take those breaks. If you don’t have an accommodation agreement with the company, you should. But know that however you handle this with your boss is best for the scenario you are currently in.

If people who smoke can get away from the desk for breaks, you can take the time to unwind for 10 min.

Now if you are stepping away every 10 minutes - then there is something else going on. 😉

Use them as a reward for completing a task

First of all, they’re dying slowly. Physically and mentally and emotionally. You do what you need to do to be successful. We all have different brains.

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.

Any other loan officers in here? I'm trying to decide if I should dig in with the current market or look to pivot. I've only been a loan officer since 10/2020. So this is my first rough patch. The style of leads my company provided was different than what they have me doing now. It went from hot inquiries to cold call center calls. My wife makes good money, but I don't want her to carry our finances for long as we are a team. What jobs could I look to pivot to if I pivot? Thanks fishes!

I have been at my company for 3.5 years. One year ago (2.5 years into my employment with them) they re-leveled everyone and I was bumped to an entry level position on the terms that they changed my job title when they re-leveled, so “technically” I am at the early stages of my new title. Even though the job duties did not really change.
I’m not sure the best way to approach this. Has anyone else had a similar experience or know how I should advocate for myself?

Any tips for organizing a bedroom, closet, dresser & bathroom? My teen has IADHD, and low executive functioning. Her room looks like a land mine. Clean clothes are mixed in with dirty, her desk is a disaster, she won’t let go of clothes she’s outgrown, drawers are open with clothes hanging out. A therapist said to close her door if we don’t want to see it but it’s more than that. She needs this important life skill & I don’t know how to help. Easier to organize w/o her but that’s not a solution.

What types of work accommodations can help people with ADHD? I am starting to believe 35+ of having not managed my ADHD has really negatively impacted me in career growth etc. I'm realizing a lot of things about myself are because of the ADHD. I want better for myself and family but 1. I don't enjoy the same things forever 2. Imposter syndrome and RSD make me believe it's acceptable to start over in new places at low salaries. 3. Typical college won't work for me. 4. I also can't relocate.

Can anyone relate? If I’m stressed out, I can’t focus on my tasks because my productivity is driven by creative and explorative thought. When I’m stressed or anxious, my mind doesn’t have the room or space to think freely to get things done, and I end up bouncing around different tasks not getting anything done. And then there’s the whole dopamine addiction issue with doing a small amount of work then hopping on social media because you feel like you need the reward. Just me?

So today was my first day on a stimulant (diagnosed as an adult), and everyone says its suppose to feel like *boom* magic, or normal (?) , I guess. Knowing that is figurative, what should I actually be expecting? I feel mostly the same, I think, though I came in and actually did started my work today. But I mean, somedays I do that...I just don't want to psyche myself out if I'm expecting too much. Or pscyhe myself in if I actually might not be experiencing what I should.
