There's been plenty of news reports of families getting banned by airlines (at least until the pandemic is over) for children not wearing masks. I would consider alternate travel methods or perhaps having your in laws travel to you.
Not trying to be a dick, but given the risks why would you fly with your unvaccinated kid? The plane may be fine but the airport certainly is not...

It surprises me when people use all this mental energy to work around the rules when the rules have been put in place specifically to keep you and others around you safe.
Just flew Southwest with my 2 year old daughter who wasn’t a big fan of wearing her mask before we flew. I was also terrified. We let her wear her mask over a pacifier (if your child takes one), bribed her with lots of snacks, and had her watch her favorite movie to distract her that she was wearing a mask. She surprisingly did really well! We also had talks with her weeks before the flight that she needed to wear one otherwise we couldn’t go to the beach, sometimes the pep talked helped. The flight attendants were very nice and never mentioned anything if she wasn’t wearing it correctly.
Also have them around other kids that wear them! They like doing what others do! We have multiple kids so they always copy the older sibling.

The flight attendants are not going to ask for your kids age. She’ll be fine if she doesn’t keep it on at all times.

The flight attendants know your kids age, it’s on the manifest. They may or may not do anything, but it’s not like they won’t have the information.
I would freak if I was on a plane and a kid was next to me without a mask.

Good thing we each have our own seat.
Following ... also have a 2 year old and he can barely wear a mask for more than 10 mins at the playground. We’ve tried them all (material, disposable etc) and so far, no dice

If you are eating a snack, you don’t need a mask so....lots of snacks 😂

That’s such a good point.
We flew with my daughter two weeks after she turned two- we just kept her binky in her mouth and boldly acted like she was just under 2. They don’t necessarily have the time to check the manifest for the exact age of the passenger so as long as you act like you’re doing what you’re supposed to and don’t be an asshole- you should be fine. That said- we flew United and they didn’t even bat an eye. But while we were waiting to board a check in attendant from delta came over to us from another desk and asked how old our daughter was and if we were flying delta- I’ve heard delta is more strict. We told her almost 2 and United and she walked away but was def ready to boot us if we were getting on her plane. Now that our daughter is 2.5 and is just developmentally better at tasks (like listening to instructions) she is able to wear her mask more frequently and I’m way less stressed about flying with her again. Amazing the difference 6 months make! When we do fly I plan next- if she’s still using a binky I’m going to sew it into a mask, and also do lots of snacks and juices since those all allow mask breaks and she can do well for 20-30 min batches but then needs a break- so snack time!
We flew delta with my 2 year old last month to see my newly vaccinated elderly grandmother. We had her wear her mask as much as possible in the airport but on the airplane she didn’t wear it much. The flight attendants were very understanding and did not make her wear her mask all the time. I do suggest lots of snacks on the plane anyway so you should be good then! Just do the best you can and be vigilant about wearing your own mask and you will be fine.

Thank you!!! We always wear our masks, so this was very helpful
Is it possible to have your in laws visit you instead of you and your family flying? That way it reduces the anxiety of your family potentially not being able to fly or getting kicked off? That seems to me the most reasonable solution. Even if your in laws aren’t fully vaccinated, if they wear a mask and face shield the chances of catching covid is much more minimized.

My mother in law has auto immune problems. We are flying there, quarantining in an air bnb for 2 weeks to be able to stay with them. We’ve waited a year for them to be able to see our daughter. She can’t fly or take any risks, hence why we have to go there and will stay in an air bnb out by a national park in Oregon
Invest in some good comfortable masks with their favorite things on them - good fit is huge in getting them to forget it’s there. Mine is obsessed with dinosaurs, and I found these toddler sized masks with Dino designs, the adjustable metal piece at the nose, adjustable straps, a curved vertical seam that’s fitted around nose and chin....I’ll pm you the Amazon link if interested.
Or, try finding a little face shield
