I have a new teammate starting on Monday. Currently it is just me and my manager on our little team. What are some things I can do to help her feel welcome?

A solid orientation process instead of just throwing her into the fire

like

Totally, that is what I am hoping to help with.

I used to be a new hire ambassador at a company. I would create a little office survival kit with a little things to make them smile - a nice pen, a $5 gift card for Starbucks, a mini Snickers to remind them to laugh it off, a mini Payday because everyone could use an extra payday, a small bottle of hand sanitizer to keep the cooties away, and a trial size bottle of tylenol for "one of those days". I would put it all in a travel mug. Just a small gesture.

like

That is a really sweet gesture!

like

Offer to buy her coffee once she’s been there a couple days, form a connection outside of work over that coffee to help build rapport. And as the poster above me said, don’t throw her into the fire.

like

Maybe ask her how she learns best, i.e., by watching/demonstration, doing/practice, repetition, etc.? Also allow her to make mistakes without feeling like a failure.
,

like

That last part is so important!

Be professional and friendly, of course. And make the point that she should feel free to ask any questions as things come up. There are always things that may not have been covered and a new person can sometimes be made to feel awkward asking questions. Make it clear that questions are perfectly okay.

like

Take your time teaching , reassure the new member that they got this Some are fast learners some arent Im a hands-on type of person that after the fact they spoke to me about it I literally had to request the “i need to do it”

like

Decorate their desk with fun welcome to the team memes along with an office survival kit! We also ask our new TMs to complete a questionnaire before starting, what’s your favorite Starbucks drink, favorite candy and favorite snack. Then we surprise them with a small treat periodically for the first few days

like

That’s a good idea to ask ahead of time!

I'd make sure to reach out to her and let her know that you're excited to start working together and also available for any questions they might have. It's always nice whenever you start a new job and know that you have someone in your corner that wants to help you succeed, so I'm sure she'd appreciate it.

like

Thank you, I will do that!

Tell her to find a job some place else.

like

REALLY?! I’m assuming you’re being sarcastic. I don’t get it??! How rude!

Have some company swag waiting at her desk

like

Show them how the company software works. Work with them how to work with other departments. Give them only positive ideas and feedback.

like

Generally? Be kind, Make her feel welcomed, that you're available to speak w/her and REALLY mean it, as any "newbie" she probably feels stressed, overwhelmed (perfectly normal) Perhaps, take a little time to get to know her (professionally), in an informal manner and place.

No questions are "dumb" and it's going to take a little time, and patience. I'm fortunate. I work with a great team, and great boss, he can be demanding (It's part of his job), but we all know he's got our backs.

Makes all the difference in the world, IMHO and the "payoff" is you'll have a good productive worker (and one more professional allie).

Hopefully, your employer has some type of orientation, Ensure she participates

Thanks for this thoughtful response!

What you should do when dealing with a very toxic worker that keep on sending passive aggressive messages to you as well as in group chat and email.
Things like when you answer his question he respond: I know that
Or when he keeps on saying my change requests were just minor in group meeting but actually not.
And keep on saying how hard he works when he clearly wasn’t and already underperformed compared to an intern level.

How to not let this toxic co-worker not poison me any further?

If you notice that a junior associate on your team has over-billed, how would you handle it? I don’t want to get them in trouble, but noticed that they billed extremely high numbers even though I was doing all they work on the deal and they completely disappeared other than for client conference calls. Certain things that they billed for on the final invoice, I alone handled and never asked them to do. Appreciate any advice. I’m a mid-level in case it helps for context.

I don’t get documentation time either, but all notes are to be completed the same day.
