Chief
should you give your trainer a Christmas gift ? I usually do - don’t need to spend a lot, but a nice gift certificate to a restaurant or fitness store or a bottle of a nice liquor.
Of the $150, your trainer is getting less than half.
And $150 is crazy high.
If you are getting value out of your training sessions and want to give a small gift. Otherwise don’t sweat it (pun intended)
He’s not exhibiting professional behavior and I recommend giving this feedback to a manager.
I worked as a fitness trainer in the past. I never expect gifts, yet some customers whom I have a deeper connection with gifted me food or some snacks when they return from their travels.
Do not feel obliged to gift. Gift out of your goodwill and your appreciation for the work your trainer has done to help you achieve the results you were looking for.
two thoughts
1. No gifts
2. consider long term other options if money is a concern — online coaching is now super affordable (100-300/month)
Yeah: it's rude for them to say that, and you *could* let that impact your decision, but ultimately you should stay true to your own guidelines and instincts (and.. kinda seems like this person doesn't seem like someone worth building a relationship with.)
FWIW I usually give my doorman, dry cleaner, nail tech, mailman and other regular service folk (incl. fave fitness instructors) a gift card around the holidays. It's a nice gesture and builds relationships and shows respect and thoughtfulness. Yeah it's a nice thing to do, but TBH, it has reciprocal perks too: guess who gets 5 star service every time, who they will stay open late for, who they will offer to spot and coach even when they are off the clock. It's a show of respect and gratitude to one another - but only really meaningful if that respect is genuine. To be clear, I don't expect anything other than the usual service, but it tends to work out well :)
Rising Star
I pay $150/hour for one on one yoga sessions and $90/hour for other bodywork. I give both of these practitioners holiday gifts with about a $300 value. It may be old school but I think it’s a classy gesture.
Yes, it is proper protocol. Give him a bottle of wine and don't overthink it.
I consider this as gifting a "service person" just as I do the concierge in my building, hairdresser, etc. Nothing over the top, but a consideration of the season and gesture of good will.
That’s the rate the gym provided and assigned him the trainer. So that trainer is paid via the gym an hourly wage. The trainers I know don’t get much. Either way a gc for like $25 whether Starbucks or whatever would be nice. I’m sure he’s just appreciative and excited of anything that’s given.
My friends and I don’t even do gifts anymore, if anything we’d grab a nice meal. I don’t understand the gift giving for someone you have a professional relationship with like that.
Not to mention, what if you don’t celebrate Christmas? Then you obviously wouldn’t give a gift. If anything, I’d get them a gift when I feel they’ve helped me hit a major goal, not because there’s a certain date on the calendar.
I would report his behavior anonymously
Agree. It doesn’t sound like you’re close. Id ask for a new trainer and be clear about why.
I pay for my service, and I give a tip at time of service. At no time have any of these providers given me a holiday gift as their client.
I have a personal trainer whom I pay $85 a session twice a week and a do a group session twice a week at $25 a week. Same trainer. So I will give about $250 for a gift, a little more than a weeks training. She's also pregnant and going on mat leave so I'm going to double that, especially as she's nearly doubled my strength gains in 5 months. So work in, plus the value of their time and their circumstances. That's how I establish how much to tip.
As someone who used to be a personal trainer, I can almost completely assure you that your trainer is not making $150 per session. When I worked at Equinox, one session with my costs the client that much but I would only see $20/hr. Additionally, the hours are grueling and a trainer has to do all of their own sales pitches. I feel that giving your personal trainer a gift would be the same as giving one to your doorman, your hairstylist, your nail technician, etc. all of which are good etiquette :)
This has equinox written all over it. I’m stubborn and would change trainers because I’d find that super annoying, but that’s just me.
Hmmm if you like your trainer, a small gift is fine. Its unprofessional that they are mentioning this to you though
Not good. Your focus is your health and well-being not his pocketbook, find another trainer that emphasizes actual health and fitness
Yeah $150 is a lot. My trainer is about $60 per
Giftcard to nike or adidas
Do your work clients give you a holiday gift? Granted, it’s a different industry. Seems unprofessional to plant the seed. It sounds like your relationship is new and a gift would feel forced, so fine to skip.
I’ve had a trainer for years and I’ve never given him a Christmas gift.
