I have a remote job and even when I'm on PTO, I end up checking on my work anyway. It's one of the reasons why I'm on the verge of getting burned out. Any tips on how to avoid checking up on my work even while on leave?

During my downtime, I set alarms on my phone. They're labeled like "check email now" or "open calendar now". If I'm not notified about these things, then I don't even think twice about checking up on them. It helps me be more organized.

like

That's helpful, thanks. It's kind of the opposite of how I'm living now. At the moment, I have alarms for personal things, but all of the other spaces get filled up with work. Not really how I want to continue living.

Don't open your work apps on the weekend. If you reply to messages then you set the precedent that you work during your PTO. You're on PTO. Don't check your email!!! It's easy. Just don't open it! The people will wait. You know you'd have to wait for other people if they were on PTO. They can wait. They will survive. If it is urgent, in your absence they can contact the person in your OOO reply that you designate.

like

It's such a challenge, but this is helpful. Designating someone else for them to contact in my OOO email is a great idea because then I won't be worried about them having to wait. I might have to let go of worrying *how* someone else will handle it. Maybe I also need to schedule a therapy appointment, it seems, lol

Turn off notifications for work-related apps or emails on your phone or laptop. This should keep you from checking them during your leave period.

Before you go on leave, try to wrap up any loose ends and complete any tasks. This will give you peace of mind and allow you to fully switch off from work while you are away.

Put up an out-of-office message in your email and voicemail to indicate that you are on leave and will be unavailable. This will certainly help you in managing expectations and reducing the quantity of notifications you get.

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. My entrepreneurial pursuits remain hampered. For the interim, I’ve been looking for a remote opportunity where I can leverage my skills in marketing, sales, social media, and elsewhere for a decent sum. I have a social media presence which, in recent years, reached millions. There has to be something exciting I can do.
