I started consulting 4 months ago and I haven’t enjoyed it one bit. Does it get better or should I start looking for something new? I went thru a rigorous interview process just to get this job. And I wanna give it a real chance. Advice?

I came from industry and been in consulting nearly 2 years now. Definitely feeling the same. Tights deadlines for non-impactful work, especially compared to tech where time felt well spent developing and deploying ML applications. Meanwhile in consulting ML and AI just seem to be buzz words for doing a simple model, with no robustness testing or cross validation, and sniping images into a PowerPoint....

That said, I do understand it's appeal for some. Especially if you are very extroverted and enjoy client interactions and interacting with others internally.

I am pretty extroverted. And I enjoy meaningful work. But this stuff just seems to be fluff at times. There’s a lot of ego and inflated sense of self i see regularly.

Depends what you don't like about it. Many things vary massively from project to project, and many things get better over time. Generally would recommend sticking out for a year and see how you feel, but if you're really hating it then do what you need to do.

Agree with BCG, things vary massively based on the project and after a year at any job you should feel less overwhelmed. If you still don't like it after a year then leave.

like

I was in the same boat as you. You've probably realised that it's not for you long term, which is fine, it's the same for me. But I would suggest you try and stick it out for at least a year or two, you will learn loads and build valuable skils. A lot of it does get better but some of the things you dislike are probably just inherent to consulting.

like

@OP, if you were good with the first project, then I don't think you hate consulting. Your just hate your current project. But the beauty of consulting is that teams and projects are temporary. So in a few weeks or months, yous be done with the crazy client and hopefully a more stable client comes along.
That said if there are other aspects you don't like, I agree with others encouraging ypu to just stick on for a year minimum and look for other exit opportunities.

like

You should begin to develop a tolerance to it around the 10 year mark.

funny

What don’t you like about it? Your dislike could be for our work in general, just due to an adjustment period, or project-specific

I’ve only started somewhat liking it a year in - I would hold tight. If after a year of doing things to try to improve what you don’t like you feel bad then feel free to take ofd

I started interviewing early Oct with a company that reached out via recruiter. The hiring manager was very straight forward with me that I was his top candidate and I was told all other interviews were very positive incl CMO. The recruiter said they'd be making an offer but it's now been three weeks. Anyone else had the process drag on like this? Meanwhile I'm taking other interviews and was offered a promotion at current company, but was very interested in this one. What would you do?
