I took a step back from private prarice (12yrs patent pros.), after feeling burned out, to take a job at the USPTO. The comp at the USPTO is not sustainable and not at all fulfilling.

I am in the Raleigh area and looking to return to private practice but debating boutique vs big law. Really wanting to find that elusive work life balance, but finding it hard to get a read on smaller firms in the area. Anyone have experience in this location or a firm that hires remote?

Is real market biglaw pros even a thing anymore? Sure there are a few holdouts, but mostly seems to be a dying practice area, or a practice area focused on counsels and agents paid below market.

I guess it depends what you consider big law, definitely a ton of firms looking to hire still.

Knobbe?

No. Not good for wlb

Ask them how many foreign apps/119s they do. Firms that thrive on that with a good paralegal/support system should be better comp than uspto but also wlb

Are you still looking? Experienced prep and pros attorneys with internal USPTO perspective can be valuable given the state of…policy. How tied to Raleigh vs. Charlotte are you?

Always looking, but I'm pretty tired to the area.

Hadn’t noticed this sub before, and most of the threads are old so thought I’d ask a follow up - how has everyone been handling parenting with public accounting? I’ve got a toddler and my wife is an accountant (industry), and we only have a few immediate family in the country- but they have health concerns. Busy season was rough, things are looking better now as things return to normal. Still working crazy hours if you count the daycare duties on top of utilization targets.

In prosecution, if a patent attorney does not try to remove prior art cited by an examiner (eg a 130 affidavit to assert an exception under102(b)(1)(A)), but instead makes arguments to overcome the art, may the attorney made an admission that bars removing the art later in prosecution. Just received such a transfer case, looking for options.

Is it reasonably possible to jump from patent prosecution to trademark prosecution?
