I was at a restaurant last week that also charged a service fee for staff healthcare. I paid it because I don't want to end up on social media as the boomer who doesn't want my server to have healthcare but seriously, how is it on me to cover such costs?

It’s virtue signaling that they’re better than other restaurants

They don’t get credit if they just bake it into costs

like

Name and shame so we can avoid. I am 10000% for waiters/waitresses being paid a living wage, but that does NOT mean passing on those costs to the consumer. Most other countries have figured this out 😤

like

You had "kung pao Brussel sprouts" for 13.5 bucks? How was that - it better be tasty? I know - unrelated to your q. And yes that's ridiculous. Do the restaurant owners also want us to pay their benefits and retirement contributions? And btw 3 dollas for a Swiss aioli sauce? Seriously what's this restaurant

This is actually a screenshot from the article I was reading that reminded of my experience so I screenshot this photo to share to better explain what I was talking about. You can see the publications name and URL to the article in the screenshot. Sorry if you were confused :)

I certainly wouldn't include that amount in the tip!

Making a lot of money relative to the average but feeling poor? Median after-tax income was ~$55,000 in 1981 and was ~$73,000 in 2020. Using a Bank of Canada inflation calculator $55,000 in 1981 is equivalent to ~$165,000 today, which would put someone in the top 10% of earners today. But in 1981 the median family had that extra money. Who can I blame?
