I work in business analytics analyzing clinical, pharmaceutical, and medical claims data in a health insurance setting. My expertise is in statistics, with some experience building data science models in Python. Would it be recommended that I learn/be certified in HEDIS or seek certification as a clinical data analyst? I’m very interested in building a career in clinical data science.

HEDIS is pretty easy to understand when you have access to the relevant documentation. When I was in that space we hired primarily based on data skills & then healthcare experience. We never made a decision based on HEDIS experience. Though its probably not a waste if your employer is paying & you're on the bench.

Thank you for this insight. I’ve used the DSM-IV before, but did not have experience with HEDIS, but it is a relief to know it is manageable. As a data scientist, may I ask if you work with clinical data. For those looking to strengthen clinical data skills, would you recommend practicing with Kaggle, or hiring a tutor and working one-on-one, etc.?

For me the best skill development has always come from expanding my scope of projects & gaining new experiences. In your current capacity I'd try to get involved on projects involving Procedure & Diagnosis Codes that looks at some form of clinical/clinical adjacent outcome be it HEDIS/Utilization/Spend/etc

Hi all,
I’m currently working for a small technical consulting start-up firm. I make good money, have great benefits, and they seem very happy with the work I’m doing, so I know I could move up quickly. However, tech consulting is definitely not my dream job. I want to get into data analytics, and I have an offer from a big company to do just that. I’ve only been at my current company for about 8 months, but I don’t ever see myself loving this job. How do I know when it’s time to make a change?

I own two commercial rentals in heart of a tier 1 city. Opposite to my space is a mom and pop store. I have become somewhat friends with the owners of the mom and pop store over the years and they would do one of favors for me when I asked to take care of the rentals. Now the commercial rental is vacant and I have been approached by a mid size chain for potential agreement. The dilemma is that the big box store is direct competition to the mom and pop store. What would you do ?
