If I decided to get a PhD in Communications... would this be a smart career move? I mostly want a PhD to prove something to my family but I'm not sure that's enough of a reason to get one.

No disrespect meant here. But that would be a waste of time. Unless you are in academia. There is no point for a phd in comms. It would not bring any value to your career financially or otherwise.

You’d be better off going to therapy to work through your family issues.

Why the hell would you get a PhD?

like

Curious what you need to prove to your family that requires a Ph.D? My guess is, even if you got this degree, it wouldn’t prove anything to them and you would be out at least $20k. If you are talking about such an advanced degree, you want to get that for you, not for someone else.

My opinions:
Determining if it’s a “smart” career move depends on what you want to do with your career.

You don’t need a Ph.D for most communication or PR roles within a business or organization. So is it smart to get one if you want to go lead communications for a corporate business? I’d say likely no.

When we talk PhDs, those are needed if you want to go into research in the communication field OR teaching. Both very needed and worthwhile endeavors. If that’s your career aim, then yes it is a smart career move.

Only get a PhD if you want to do research/stay in academia or if it’s required for your career track. The later is really only applies for STEM work and the former doesn’t seem to be the case for you.

You should also only ever get a PhD if you’re being paid by the university to do so - meaning you can’t do it part time. You’d be setting back your career and earnings by at least half a decade if you do a PhD full time.

Well, unless you are wanting to go into a research role or move into teaching at the university level then getting a phd probably is not the best move you. Although it might allow you to put off paying any student loans you may have for awhile.

Hello! I’m a recently graduated MSc Criminology student looking for work. I don’t know where to start or what I’m even looking for, but I’m generally interested in criminology, cyber security (no coding experience) & doing research. I’m very social and friendly and enjoy working with people, would also like hybrid work so I can work from home at times.. Any tips as to which roles I should look for? Any specific companies I should look into? (Preferably UK based, but open to most of EU)

Looking forward to getting started with the Data Science field. mainly 4 types of job profiles in order of prestige :

Data Engineer, Data Analyst, Data Scientist and ML/AI Engineer.

Really confused what to look for, can be a fair fit for any of the profiles- would love to be a Data scientist - it deals with NLP, advance statistics and analytics etc but Data Scientist as fresher?

Application dev YOE -1.5, completed PG program in Data Science, new to it. Should I try for Data analyst first?

Hi everyone, I am getting ready for a job interview, and need to create a media plan. I was hoping someone can help me with the next task: basically, I need to create inventory recommendation based on past performance. What I am very confused about is that they gave me Booked Impressions (=4M), but in the task it says I should assume there is unlimited inventory. Am I supposed to use this 4M only to calculate spend, ROAS, etc., but can actually have unlimited allocated impressions? Thank you!
