I'm a first year currently at 100% target billable hours. My team hasn't been assigning me much work and I'm worried that I won't be able to meet the target (it'll probably dip below 100% since the last few days remaining in 2020). Does this matter? What if I meet 99% of the target billables? Please advise!

If you are that close, just let your supervisors know and ask for work to ensure you hit the target. At my BigLaw firm, there is no wiggle room.

A2 is right here. Go hunt those last few hours.

like

Agreed with the folks above — just reach out to a supervisor (or two) to try and make sure you hit it!

helpful

Agree with A2 and C1 - it’s an all or nothing deal at my firm too. You either make your hours and get a bonus, or you miss your hours (by 1 hour or 100 doesn’t matter) and you don’t get a bonus.

like

First year like few months in or 1+ year in?

If the former, it really doesn’t matter.

If the latter, tell everyone and beg for those last few hours.

like

Do pro bono hours count towards your yearly goal?

Agree - pick up the phone and let people know! No reason to miss target by a few hours (especially if your bonus is all or nothing). You can do it!

How does your firm measure utilization? I work for a small boutique that defines it as utilization = number of billable hours/2,080 and full bonus payout occurs at 80% plus.

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

About to head to the HC for a role in ProdOps and Strategy in Mountain View. 4 YoE at MBB, no competing offers. Recruiter gave me a form that asks expected comp.
Levels.fyi has only PM salaries. I haven’t been told the level but expect it to be L4.

What total comp would you expect for this role? Any advice would be super helpful, as I’m a bit lost.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

Getting worried about hours. Last year I was really low (first year associate), I’ve had really good reviews so far and no negative feedback. What’s the norm as far as bonuses to first years, particularly in V20 firms? Everyone seems to be happy with my work, a well respected partner is “impressed,” but there’s no way I’ll hit bonus hours. I’ve done some pro bono but just was not given much work the first few months and still am not swamped, which I am enjoying. I’ve heard whispers that all first years get bonuses. I’d assume it depends on the overall market and firm specifically but just wondering if there’s a norm among V20.
