I’m a junior working under a senior associate and partner in a different office. The senior has gone completely MIA (multiple days of not responding to emails and teams messages). The work isn’t super urgent, but was given with instructions to have “in a couple of days at most, since the client wants it early this week.” It’s been sitting with the senior associate since Monday AM… is there a point where I should go above to the partner and ask wtf do I do, or just wait since it’s off my plate?

Wait. Don’t go above the senior associate to the partner before checking in with the senior associate. They may be swamped (I have docs in my inbox that I haven’t got to in a week and it’s not because I’m not trying). Give them a ring to check in to see how you can help.

like

Counsel 1 - yeah, I ended up calling them last night and we chatted for a bit and they said they saw the emails and thought they responded but then got tied up with some other things and that they were on a call with the client yesterday too and got an update that they no longer needed the stuff till next week. So.. turned out all good and now I’m helping on their other deal that’s picked up speed haha

like

The client will ask the partner when they want it and then the partner will follow up with the senior asking where it is, after which the senior will drop everything and review and you’ll be hurriedly making edits to try and get it out ASAP. That’s the way this job works my friend

This is correct. Source: senior associate.

You’ve more than CYA’d if stuff goes wrong; just wait.

like

Yeah, I’m going to let it rest and come back to it this weekend if I don’t hear anything. I just hate the waiting when Im happy to take the lead on something, but also of course never want to make a senior feel like I’m skipping their approval of work product.

like

The way you've described it makes it seem like a flexible deadline, so I would chill. It's been two days, not two weeks. Everyone is swamped, and senior probably has more urgent items to handle.

Working for a senior who is beyond horrible. She talks to you like you’re stupid and makes it sound like you’re absolutely terrible at what you’re doing. She’s made 5 other associates cry during her 5 year career. Got someone fired and made another person quit. It’s known around the office that she can no longer have a female associate, because she talks down to females more than she does males. I came along and thought I could deal with it but she literally makes me want to not log on tomorrow.

First 2 years for CSR is about to be over, and I’m looking at the value of the card against the annual fee. Combined with my other cards (Chase Freedom Unlimited & Flex) and deducting the $300 travel fee, the net benefit is $76. Is that enough to justify keeping the card? The lounge access at airports were a nice benefit, never got to use it since my client travel was through Amtrak.

Pros:

- fairly decent place to work (from someone who worked with the Vancouver and San Jose offices). never met a blue badger (permanent employee) who had awful things to say.

- Ashley Goodall (their SVP, Methods & Intelligence) co-authored a brilliant book on leadership and people management called “Nine Lies About Work” that makes me believe they can be an awesome place to work

Cons:

- red badgers had low morale since they’re contract workers and can be terminated at any time

Interested in constructive feedback on a small issue I’m facing. Creative is being rude and condescending - don’t waste my time speaking, interrupts, doesn’t let me finish a sentence (continued below)

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?

Struggling to get work at a free market firm after lateraling. I was very well liked at my prior firm and had high hours so really struggling to understand why folks don’t seem to want to come back to me with more work. I’ve been having a bit of trouble working with one partner at a new firm. There are definitely things I can/need to work on for improvement, but I’ve been practicing for four years and have had no trouble with other partners/peers before. This partner sent an email to me with bills for one client of his/hers I worked on and now looped in a practice management person to have a ‘management call’ (prob to talk about billing less..) Should I be looking for other opportunities?

I work at a ‘free market’ firm and have developed a very good reputation among partners. Naturally, they are drowning me in work. Each time a new case comes up, the partner will email asking if I have “time and interest” in helping. When I’m at capacity, I take these words at face value and explain why I can’t do it, and that seems to work out ok with no hard feelings. But what’s the “interest” thing? If I don’t want to work on a toxic tort case, do I just say that and pass?
