Rising Star
- Get a semi-dwarf Meyer lemon tree
- Grapevines are fun but need a structure to climb
- Go to Sloat and ask about ornamental grasses
- Buy the book “dry gardens” for inspiration
- also visit Flora Grubb (google it) for inspiration
I agree with the comment above about the lemon tree because they are just fun to have. Honestly we have just been playing the game of "this looks nice, will it grow?" But our lemon tree always does well.
Herbs are also really nice! Fresh mint and basil. Rosemary too. They proliferate quickly so little maintenance is required (except to scale back). And you can eat them! Tomatoes also like the summer sun if you have any sunny spots in your yard.

Good suggestions. Rosemary grows like crazy and grows into nice bushes.
Careful with mint - smells great but super aggressive grower and impossible to get rid of. It will take over in <1 yr! I learned the lesson the hard way and now only grow it in large pots or planters (so that it can’t take over!)
