Advice wise? It’s a simple as make the switch! There’s no harm in making the switch - especially if you’re already prepared/understanding that the compensation may be different - as life’s way too short to not pursue new things. Even if it turns out to be a bust, at least you tried.
Maybe explore Tax law a little more in-depth experience wise (as in possibly make a firm switch to get more tax law experience) before making the investment into an LLM?
In my opinion, it’s never too late to follow your interests! However, I have found that Tax law as a sub specialty within a transactional practice has a serious learning curve, even for someone who starts off in this area. Expect that it will be a ton of work to get comfortable. Also, it’s not always exciting to take a deep dive into the tax code and treasury regulations… that can be dull as well, at times.
The only attorneys I know who specialize in tax law did in fact get their LLMs. It also helped them break into that field because the LLM program had OCIs with the big 4 accounting firms and other law firms that specialize in tax so they were able to get a job lined up for after graduation. I do know one person who clerked at the tax court before getting his LLM who probably could have skipped the LLM, but he already had a CPA that helped give him an edge with his clerkship. Do be discerning about which program you go into though, just like with law school.
I am a 4th year litigation attorney. I also discovered I really like tax law and I am looking into getting my LLM right now. NYU & Georgetown are the two best options. I'm going to do some pro bono work at my law school in their tax clinic and I'm going to apply to the programs next year. I started my own firm so I am going to practice business law and then start adding easy tax cases under I get my LLM.
