M1 does have a fair point. I know quite a lot of very senior people from Big4 who got hired as an Engagement Manager as opposed to a Principal. They usually get promoted within the year but OW usually hires on the cautious side.
Other than that, it will be very important to bring client relationships with you. Even though Principals do not need to focus on selling (actually less than at other firms from what I hear) it will be quite hard to build these quickly. And that is super important to become/survive as a partner. Very few practices (eg F&R) require more of a content focus and less of client relationships but I would try to find out what the area you want to work in is like before you join
PSM does good work. External hire principals burn teams. I look forward to not working with you.
@ow2 Thanks a lot. I'm actually comparing ow vs an mbb offer at the moment. Obviously you can only give your OW perspective... Any thoughts on stuffy/elitist feel, market perception, travel as a Principal...?
@ow2 psm
Have you applied already and if so which practice?
Yes OP, what practice?
@p1, d1: psm practice
That’s a new practice, a horizontal,
no idea on culture and opps
Is OW hiring for engagement management roles? If so, what practice?
Where are you now Op?
@p1 can you speak to the culture at large? Share a burner maybe?
OW 2 is accurate
If you have an MBB offer and not sure what it takes to be a Principal at OW I’d go to MBB if you are risk adverse. However if you are confident in your skills then go OW and kill it and then lateral transfer to MBB in 3-5 years at the partner level.
What are your skills and what type of firm do you work for OP? Looks like you’re in demand- keen to know your background!
@ow3 love it. That's helpful. I sensed that genuine spirit when I had conversations with both leaders and Frontline folks. Tell me, on average how hectic/frenetic is the pace of work on engagements? What's the work life balance like? Obviously this answer is easily '... Depends on the engagement...' but I'd like to think you can share added perspective. Lastly, please share a burner if you can.
OP, if you pull off a move from Associate to Full Partner, you’ll become part of Consulting folklore!
@m2 I'm former mbb and an industry veteran as well. Experience spans corporate and commercial strategy and analytics. Industry agnostic but stronger focus on b2b tech shops.
Aligns with my previous experiences and expectations. Appreciate it ow4
I feel like there’s a bit of showboating and bravado going on here! In any case, good luck OP
Let us know once you seal the deal
@d1 definitely appreciate the feedback. Not my intention. I can always learn. Will keep you posted.
