I was at AlixPartners. Promotions were slow and pay was lagging. I went to A&M. Pay was good but hours were brutal. I went to a lower tier firm you’ve probably never heard of. I got promoted twice and they strategically staff me on engagements I can actually learn on rather than asking me to work my thumbs off to maximize the firm’s value. It’s a smaller team but I’m growing like crazy. Exits are going to be better at a big firm but if you’re looking to stay in consulting and enjoy your life, I recommend a smaller firm. I’m in RX.

depends big 4 does implementation and everyone’s so sweaty and evil so I call them imps or little green goblins
everyone outside of big 4 that I’ve interacted with for the most part is pretty nice and helpful and really cool but it varies ig
Yes.
I went MM and then I went Partner. Find a firm where you feel comfortable and supported. If you’re an introvert, MM is usually better.
Mid market I’m assuming

Big 4 not a good look
I guess your question is about non Big 4, lower tier consulting groups. In that case, the politics, management showdown are all still there. Clients will constantly be targeted by other consulting companies and so will always negotiate mercilessly.

Not here since we got bought by PE
This is the issue now.
Oh yes there is yelling - quite immature behavior at times from clients who feel they’re “buying” you… and can unleash all their frustrations on someone “outside” (since they need to control themselves with internals :( ) . I’ve been at 3 firms… it exists at all but not all clients of course but the toxic clients seem to feel freer to behave that way when they feel they’re paying through the nose…
I will be ur friend.work in healthcare in Ireland currently if u need one ! .
I've spent time at several of the companies mentioned here, and find it's more about the team/practice you're in and its leadership, than the company itself. I've been in some Big 4 roles that were awesome, heavily due to the culture of the practice and its leadership (while I know others there were toxic like you describe). And I've been in MMs where it was all politics and gaslighting, because that starts at the leadership there.
My advice is lean in heavy during your interviews to get to know the team, culture, etc. If you're interviewing with a peer, get very candid about your concerns and specific with your questions. If you're interviewing with a hiring manager / team lead where you might land, I'd ask about their perception of team culture but also their leadership style and things important to your values.

Middle market has a wide range. People at PwC tell me they’re very different from other Big 4.
