I'm gunning for my first genuine team lead role (outside of field promotions and informal leadership).

Any advice on how to approach this? It's an internal position, and I'm used to applying externally. Do I do something different here? A portfolio?

Essentially, looking to act as a tech lead of a small team within a large technical department. I've been in this team a little while, and I'm already doing some amount of tactical leadership informally.

There's an opportunity to make this formal.

You mentioned that you have been doing this already for a while. I would suggest document each and everything which you have done for this role and share with your leaders. Build a strong ‘documented’ case for yourself so that they can piggyback on your notes.

100% I'm going to use their own career scaffold to highlight the responsibilities of the role that I'm already covering and some ideas on how I want to address the remaining gaps.

This is pretty exciting! I guess the first question is, how do you feel about it this? I think a portfolio is good, or at least some kind of record all the things you've done, their impact andd what you've contributed. I'd also think about future visiion - it's not just about what you've done but what you THINK you can do and what you'd like to accomplish moving forward

smart

This is valuable advice! What are some good ways to present that? (Conversely, what are some bad ways/faux pas?)

I'm going to keep iterating over that over the Easter weekend. I'm expecting an interview in the next couple of weeks tbh.

Reach out to the team first let them know you want the honor to lead them and get ready for feedback

I have been in management for the past 8 years and part of large corporations. I had a great review and a 5.5% raise and a great bonus at my company. But I also got a new Director and a peer manager of mine left the company, so I will be absorbing her team. My remit quadrupled+ in a recent re-org with no increase in pay/promotion, my new director is new to the company and was zero help, and I was passed over for recent promotion during the comp cycle. Now they have taken credit for the project I’ve been building over the past year+ without giving me props whatsoever to higher ups. What is the best plan of action here?

Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?
