This is the result from the John Tory years keeping property taxes low and letting the city’s infrastructure deteriorate. Any competent engineer will tell you that the deferred maintenance figure in this city has been rising year after year because politicians just kept kicking the can down the road. Add on the fact that development charges have cratered due to the lack of new development which municipalities have been depending on to backstop the inadequate property taxes; this is the end result. The Mayor is finally doing what needed to be done for a long time now.
The next thing that needs to be fixed is that absurd Toronto Police budget. Someone needs to get those pigs to do their job instead of ripping off the taxpayers.
Taxes have been increasing below the rate of inflation for a decade while we ignored infrastructure costs. So… the bill has come due.
Seems like we were pretty average, actually.
Taxes in Toronto are among the lowest in the GTA, regardless what you think of Chow, taxes at the current levels aren’t sustainable.
Toronto’s land transfer taxes are a relatively recent development, and a bit of a stopgap measure to avoid having to raise property taxes. But they’re a one time fee, so eventually they run out if you don’t move.
What’s there to love, what’s so special above and beyond everywhere else
I feel the same way. Investing in the city is important, but I also wonder if the money’s being spent as wisely as it could be. It’s hard not to worry when budgets keep creeping up.
I dont live in Toronto but I own an investment property there for which I am going through some dealings with the city. The level of professionalism that I have encountered on several city associates left much to be desired. Their level of text reading comprehension is akin to that of a monkey, and for that I have paid several thousand in fees. I guess the municipal government should go through a value chain analysis to ensure the budgets are properly used
Love that there are so many idiots willingly ready to pay more taxes, while not being inclined to question the government’s incompetence.
