You can't be fired for having a medical issue and needing to take leave - just document everything so it's clear the company knew you needed leave for a legitimate medical reason.
I have documentation that I have been working with the doctor since December. This performance plan just came about recently so I don’t want it to appear like it’s an excuse because this seriously has been going on I mean for a lot longer since December honestly but I have been seeing a doctor more recently which I don’t know if this would be considered with all the performance stuff right now

Take care of yourself. Bring this up with your RL and they should be supportive/helpful for you. Good luck OP
i’ll have no choice monday. manager knows i was at ER so i expect there will be questions

OP, you cannot be fired for going on medical leave. In fact it is extremely unlikely for GCO to approve that even if there’s performance history.
In order to qualify for a short term disability leave, you need to work with your physician who will have to certify you need that for insurance purposes. Obviously if you have a serious condition requiring surgery, this should not be a problem.
Until then, my suggestion would be to Val your partner and share what transpired to the extent you’re comfortable. You do not have to share anything if you don’t want, but if it were me I’d say I was in the ER and will need surgery. And at least take a few days or something off until you can get things under control short term.
Finally I will tell you that your health should take priority for you. Even if things don’t work out, you will find another job but if you f up your health, it is forever. No job is worth it.
Unrelated to this, and clearly I don’t know what I don’t know but I will also tell you that very few people come back from a PIP. In most places it is just the formality before the next step can be taken. Now I would like to stress that I’m not at PWC and I don’t know your situation so I could very well be wrong, but at the very least when you get your health under control, make sure you are getting the transparency on this.
Get better.
i’m considering this. if i go this route, i cannot be fired because i’d be FMLA protected right? upon my return they also couldn’t fire me because of retaliation right? i’m starting to think the leave is the best option
OP, Sorry about your situation. I can’t imagine what it feels like to have the added stress of worrying about your job in your condition.
At some point you just have to stop caring about work and optics and put priority on your health.
Also I would not sign anything around a PIP. Firms use this all the time to get people out with minimal/zero legal ramifications.
Short term disability?
That’s what I was thinking especially with possibly needing surgery

How serious is the medical issue? When does your performance year close, June? Can you hold off or no?
this is what i was afraid of. it’s a risky move and may appear i’m trying to dodge the PIP (when i’m not). honestly i think i might at most just need a flex schedule for doctors appointments etc. because honestly what would i do between doctor appointments anyway? i’d be bored. could i ask for a flex arrangement, and that way i can at least still make positive progress towards getting myself out of this PIP? (for reference i’m not on a formalized PIP but HR was involved so i’m taking it very seriously). feedback so far after 1 week (of 4 total) is good. so i’m weighing my options..
part of me also wants to say, hey maybe part of the fact that my performance is shit is bc my health is failing. that would just sound like an excuse, but...
