I say go for it - it sounds like you are making a well thought out choice and you never know what is on the other side. Sometimes it is a bigger risk to stay in a nowhere job, than to take that first step forward. I am rooting for you!
Thank you for the encouragement!
I also quit my job with nothing lined up! It’s amazing. I’m in Mexico City freelancing for a month. 😍 I was also terrified but I know it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.
Good luck! You’ll be fine!
I left my job in early October - am currently job searching and also trying to find consulting work. I am so glad I left. I had become really depressed, repetitive in my thought patterns (in an unhealthful way), and quite grumpy. It had become so hard for me to put things in perspective. I do feel very very grateful that I am able to not be working right now. I certainly can’t be out of the workforce indefinitely but I do not regret my decision - even though the economy is not great.
It’s probably not a good choice but damn I wish I could do this right now.
Why?
Life is too short to be miserable at work! Go have fun, rest, make memories with loved ones!
You said you have money saved up, a refreshed portfolio, and little to no work-life balance… so here’s the question I have:
Will the stress of leaving the job without unemployment or severance be worse than the stress of staying? Only you know the answer for yourself.
If you feel like you would only be swapping the kind of pressure you’re under - as opposed to reducing it - then stay a little longer and practice setting some boundaries.
If you really feel like you want to take the leap, and your eyes are wide open, go for it. Your bravery will likely be rewarded.
Good luck and Godspeed, as they say. Keep us posted on your choice.
Thanks for the optimism. I still turned in my resignation yesterday and I still feel like it was the right choice. Remaining in the position seemed like a one way ticket to stagnation. I’m excited to see what comes next.
I quit over the summer. Best decision I ever made. I wasn’t valued, underpaid, my boss was very toxic, and it took more effort to work each day. I took a leap of faith and I’m following a feeling/peace I can not explain. It’s a scary thing to do but it’s worth it. You’re the only one who knows what’s best for you. Yes, it sounds crazy but if you don’t leap then when? I’m more balanced and in tune with every part of my myself, loss weight (was extremely hard prior now after letting go things are much easier), sleeping better, mentally more balanced, growing in my abilities, learning new skills and networking with some great people. I spend more time with my visiting family. A job will come. Yes, there are layoffs but companies are still hiring. I believe more will within the first half of the new year. Also, look at smaller companies or tech adjacent. You know you worth and you have a plan. Will you probably need to adjust it as time goes on maybe. You are not wrong for choosing you and not many people will do this. It’s a great leap of faith. You’ll be a better person for it entering your path/role. You also know what you want. Write it down and speak it to existence. Words have power. Good luck, you got this!!!

Thank you so much for the encouraging words. I’m glad to hear things are working out for you!!
It's a terrible choice.
Why not apply for new jobs while you have one? It is much easier to get a new job when you have one because nothing signals employability like being employed.
You may have heard, but the economy is poor and going to worsen. This will not increase your prospects.
And if you, God forbid, tell a potential employer that you left because you weren't going up a magical career escalator, which is what you are implicitly looking for, there is no way they will want to invest time/money in onboarding you.
If you are underutilized, use your remaining bandwidth to improve your skillset outside of work while looking for another job.
I mean, unless you have a parent willing to just house and feed you. and you don't mind depending on them to take care of you. In which case, cool, whatever.
I want to quit my job every single day.

No one should have to live like that. I hope you’re able to transition to something you enjoy soon.
I did the same in August. I started an LLC and now freelancing. It's super scary but much more motivating to work hard for yourself than killing yourself for a toxic company that gives zero f$&@ about you! Try it. Worse case, it doesn't work and you go back to a miserable job 😂 Go for it 🙌
No, you deserve to give yourself a chance to explore and keep the excitement going. You might still feel on some days that the momentum is lost or question yourself on this decision but then those are the days you’re being tested to bounce back
as long as you have some money in the bank to pay your bills, leave the job. worse case you can pick up some contract freelance work while trying to find a FT position
I’d just act your wage and coast at work while looking for a new job.
I'm with you. I put in my two weeks!

Alright, let’s go!

Ya parroting everyone else this is an insanely stupid idea. Unless you have enough money saved up to live off of for 1 year plus, you could time this recession perfectly wrong and wipe yourself out financially. I’m all for going for things but this doesn’t sound like you have a plan, sounds like you hate your job and wanted validation for making a poor decision from anonymous internet people. You seem manic I would talk to a licensed therapist
I did this back in August - still searching for a job but I have no regrets. what company are you leaving? I’ve always had an interest in graphic design 🙂

Thank you for sharing those resources!
It’s good to hear you’re remaining resilient and best of luck to you as well! You’ve got this.
A note on graphic design, I know creatives who don’t have a degree who are in the field. If you’re interested, you can definitely achieve success with a little practice and developing a keen eye for the core principles: hierarchy, contrast, proportion, proximity, repetition, emphasis, and unity.
And the kicker is a lot of design rules are being broken in present day design, so that won’t apply to all creative positions. There are so many opportunities for design styles.
The biggest changes I’ve made in my life have always led me to somewhere better. It may take time and you have to be disciplined with setting goals and using your “free time” wisely. Don’t be afraid to promote what kind of work and projects you’re open to. You can do this!! (I too quit a job after two years bc of burnout managing social channels for 10 years!)
I am in the same situation but I am not leaving until I have a new position. I am in staffing and this choice could potentially hurt you financially. People leave without preparing all the time, and end up coming right back begging for the job they just quit. I would advise making yourself available, but also finding companies that hire RIGHT NOW. If you want more, that takes research. Don’t quit, and make sure your transition doesn’t put you in a bind.
Do what makes you happy life is too short to do anything else!
Good for you! I’ve done the same and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made in my life. ✨
Thank you! It was definitely the right choice for me.
Good luck. Plenty of jobs out there. Search for something you enjoy
Can you share how you tell them in an exit interview, “why you quit” and how they respond
Sure, I didn’t get a full exit interview yet, but I told my boss it’s time for a change and I want to work closer to home (I moved out of state about a year ago but stayed on as a remote worker).
I would be wary of this unless you’re really financially prepared to be out for a bit. Sadly - and wrongly - design is one of those areas people think they can do without.
Are you planning to freelance, etc?
Just make sure where you go next isn’t the same culture as where you were :) I’ve been upfront in interviews about my values (ex: family time) and feel confident with the ones I’m in final rounds with.
