I’m wondering if I have a mild form of trichotillomania or it’s just a symptom of anxiety. Since young, but especially recently, I’ve had a bad habit of picking my hair, I’d run my fingers through my hair and pick out those that felt damaged and I’d do it until my arms started hurting from staying up so long. I don’t have any bald spots but I’m worried it’ll get worse cause I noticed I do it more often when I’m stressed these days. Is this normal..? How do I stop this?

I’ve dealt with a similar problem (picking at skin, running my hands through my hair until there’s a pile of strands on the floor) and honestly, it helped to have something else to occupy my hands. I have anxiety, but I’ve read that it’s also a potential OCD symptom.

Whether it’s my phone, my Switch, or a drawing pad, if my hands were doing something, I was less likely to default back to the trichotillomania-ish habits.

Open Path is an amazing therapy platform for people with financial barriers. Connects your with a therapist with sliding scale costs who you can meet in person or virtually with. Three of my friends use it and love it!

Oh dang, are you me?? I started doing the exact same thing when I was in middle school. I thankfully don’t have any bald patches either but it’s taken a long long time to figure out how to stop. It’s a habit, and breaking a habit is notoriously difficult. For me, mindfulness and meditation help with the general anxiety, and realizing in the moment that I’m picking my hair and interrupting whatever thought that goes along with the picking.
One thing I picked up somewhere in the internet: try naming the hair you’re about to pick. It’s so silly, and it feels so dumb, but it’s helped in the past. I have a head full of Carlos’ and Tabithas and who knows what else.

like

I feel you. The bottom line when it comes to breaking habits is do whatever works for you, and don’t stop till you find whatever that thing is that works. You don’t have to live with it. 🖤

My best friend has trich and it’s so hard to witness. She’s been struggling since college and pulls eyelashes and eyebrows and head hair. Behavioral therapy and anti anxiety medicine has helped, it’ll be an ongoing struggle and if you can get ahead of it, you can stop. My dad did it when he was a kid and stopped eventually.

I’m sorry to hear that, I hope she’s doing better now. Think I should check in with a therapist after looking at all the comments.

Compulsive skin picker checking in! Who knows wtf is normal these days, but I've been picking my skin for as long as I can remember. It got worse when I was prescribed Adderall for my ADHD and it turns out picking can be a side effect...go figure. I have my good days and my bad days, but I can't get any work done without the medication so my face is usually covered in scabs. I suggest checking out the website https://www.bfrb.org and finding a therapist who knows more about picking and hair pulling. I also have anxiety so it's sometimes hard to tell if my picking is caused by the disorder itself, anxiety, or as a side effect of medication. Could be all of the above, who knows...

I'm also taking an OTC supplement called NAC that is supposed to help pickers and pullers. That might also be something to look into if you feel comfortable (and get guidance from your therapist on how to take it).

Have you heard of tapping? If meditation isn’t your thing this may help. Give it a google search, but it’s quite literally just taking your finger and tapping certain points on your body - typically central points like your forehead between your eyes or your chest/collar bone. The steady rhythm grounds your nervous system, gives you something else to focus on, and also gives your hands something to do!! Paired with breathing techniques it’s just the same as meditation without the pressure to “empty your mind.”

During the pandemic I dove into my self care (found a therapist, learned I was having seizures and got on meds for that). My journey has been difficult and not pretty to watch. Somewhere along the line I feel like my fiancé saw too much. I no longer feel like romantic parters and instead feel like we have a “caretaker/patient” type relationship. I don’t feel sexy or attractive anymore. I talked to him about this and he feels bad. But I feel guilty for bringing it up. Anyone else had this issue?

So I've had 2 hiring managers and several recruiters from Amazon reach out to me about applying for some open positions with the company (android). I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?

My last therapist keeps coming up in my mind. I left her when I moved to a new area before COVID dug in and frankly it felt like leaving a girlfriend. She also disclosed in the final session that she was a member of AA and knew several of the people I occasionally discussed from the rooms. Her knowledge of the program certainly built trust with me early on, but it has been two years. I discussed it with my current therapist but she’s still in there. Any advice?
