Is tech sales difficult? Seems like a pretty simple job.

The better the product, the easier to sell. But tech sales is not a walk in the park lol.

In four years of tech sales, I have aged ten years. I only bang my head against the wall on days that end in -y.

But seriously - I worked at a top of the industry security vendor, and the product sells itself for the most part. That being said the stress and pressure of constantly making sales is still extremely rough. I recently moved to a security company that was struggling to make sales, and it was horrible in the sense that I was just sitting there not making sales or hitting quota (that stress is a whole different beast).

Basically, a job in tech sales is just begging some C suite executive to buy some technology that they would arguably be fine without, rinse and repeat. Tech companies lose millions every quarter in the hopes that they’ll be profitable as they scale, so that responsibility gets put onto the sales team to bring in annual recurring revenue. It never ends.

This, in my opinion, is a weak mentality. Tech sales clearly isn’t for you and that’s alright, but if you have what it takes it’s very fun and quite rewarding!

There’s lots of variables such as the product, who you’re selling to, the market you’re playing in..startup vs corporate..If the product literally sells itself, then yeah it’s easy. Or if it’s a cheap tool then it’s easier to sell. If the product is in a saturated market & it’s a technical product, it’s going be harder because you need to speak technical & why your product vs your competitors. I can probably go on with scenarios, but hope that’s provides some perspective.

Its super easy, you just show up and get a check

Depends on the company and less on the product

For a couple of my co-workers that walked into million dollar deals, yes, it's easy (right place at the right time). For the rest of us - not too easy

like

Lol. It depends: if you have a hit product with good pmf, np, if you have some poorly constructed poorly thought out piece of garbage not so easy.

Lol. Even if you have a great product it’s still very difficult. I’m the top AE in my segment and still have to grind. Selling into executives is never easy, especially with a recession looming

I have 2 YOE as a BDR and think I could succeed in either position. Both have hybrid work set ups. Any thoughts or advice is appreciated! Thanks.
