I’ve been with RSM for 12+ years. At this point figured I’d stay to make partner, but I was talking to a close friend at a small firm at the same level as me making $60k a year more and working less. She said her firm would love to hire me. It is in a different city and I could work completely remote. I never thought about jumping to another public accounting firm but the money is better and my work/life balance would be better. Should I at least consider the offer?

How confident are you that they will make you partner? They do make "promises" to many people that they can't keep. I ended up leaving the firm for a smaller firm and my comp now is around 300k but I'm not a partner.

Hmm…do you envision yourself being a partner? The fact that you mention you could be working less in another role seems to indicate maybe not anymore? I guess I say because I think being partner would be a 24/7 role.

Not sure how close you are to the cut of making partner (1-2 years etc) but is leaving for 60k better than the increase in comp when you make partner?

I don’t have all your facts but I would probably think about stuff like that.

I have friends that have done the same. I've never seen such a large salary difference though. Benefits at smaller firms can be atrocious so watch out for that. There's also the concern about longterm viability. Will this local firm's clients be gobbled up by automation? Are they a volume shop where you'd be managing hundreds of needy and low fee clients?

helpful

Yea base salary is in the ballpark but her bonus is 5 times what mine was this past year. I don’t have much insight yet as to benefit or types of clients. Definitely things to consider.

I'd take the timeline RSM told you with a grain of salt. If you take this new job you'd be starting over building goodwill, reputation, and a book of business. The question is can you do that and make partner at the new place around the same time as RSM? If so, go with whatever has better work life balance and has better leverage model

like

Go for it! You can always return to RSM and they would pay you a premium or any other firm. Give it a year and see if it was a good choice. I’ve made a few moves and greatly increased salary & well being. Enjoy my variety of client experiences too.

Hi all - just joining and looking for some guidance! How do I advocate myself for that to my manager without sounding unappreciative of the position I’m in?

I bring a background from the clinical operations of my company, scheduling, field work, and what the average employee faces. I want to look else where but I’m not sure.
